In the heart of a concealed metal storage garage nestled behind an Allen Park, Mich., wind tunnel building, a select team convened in 2021 for an after-hours endeavor that seemed like a distant aspiration on paper: conceive a Mustang to rival the finest European sports cars.

The outcome? The remarkable 2025 Ford Mustang® GTD, a limited-edition, high-performance street legal car that encapsulates the Mustang's essence while embracing modern advancements.

Inspired by the Mustang GT3 set to dominate Le Mans in 2024, the all-new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is a technological marvel. With an imposing carbon fiber wide body and a commanding rear wing, its aesthetic tells a compelling story at first sight. It's a revolutionary Mustang.

Jim Farley, Ford's president and CEO, enthuses, "Mustang GTD defies every convention of a supercar. Our approach was different this time. We didn't adapt a track car for the road; we engineered a road-worthy race car. Mustang GTD inherits the racing technology from our Mustang GT3, wraps it in a carbon fiber Mustang body, and unleashes it on the streets."

Every component of the Ford Mustang GTD has a purpose. Each contour is a result of function. Its primary goal? To dominate tracks with racing technology exceeding its predecessors. Crafted by the minds behind Ford's Mustang race cars and Le Mans champion GT, it's designed to be the fastest road-ready Mustang ever.

The Ford Mustang GTD is firmly grounded with substantial downforce from active aerodynamics and substantial grip from oversized tires linked to an advanced dual ride height short-long arm front and multi-link rear suspension. It halts with authority, thanks to carbon ceramic brakes, and features an 8-speed rear transaxle and lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft for nearly balanced weight distribution. All this power is harnessed by a symphonic supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with an estimated 800 horsepower.

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, proudly states, "We delved into the racing technology beneath its surface. Its inner workings are more captivating than what meets the eye as it speeds by. The Mustang GTD is a road-going rocket."

Honoring Le Mans-winning heritage

The Ford Mustang GTD emerged from the vision of the Mustang GT3 race car's return to Le Mans in 2024. It will stand at the zenith of the Mustang family, which now encompasses both street-legal and track-specific race cars. This extended family includes the recently unveiled Mustang GT4, the Mustang GT3, and upcoming models like the Mustang Dark Horse R spec racer. All carry the legacy of Mustang as Ford's most celebrated and triumphant nameplate, conquering streets and tracks worldwide. The "GTD" designation, derived from the IMSA "GTD" racing class aligned with FIA GT3 technical regulations, symbolizes this new Mustang's prowess.

Jim Farley boldly asserts, "This is our declaration. We're challenging all contenders. We're confident in showcasing our capabilities. I'm ready to put the Mustang GTD to the test against any other auto executive in their finest road car."

A collaboration between Ford and Multimatic, the developers behind Mustang GT3, Mustang GT4, and Le Mans victor Ford GT, birthed the Mustang GTD. This Mustang embodies the culmination of decades of engineering evolution stemming from constant learning through competitive racing. An embodiment of precision and intent, the Mustang GTD is destined to etch its mark in Mustang and Ford's legacy.

Harnessing the air for peak performance

The Ford Mustang GTD's design is a testament to purposeful ingenuity. Each contour is tailored to enhance aerodynamic performance, optimized for track speed. From the front splitter and vented hood to the C-pillar mounted hydraulically controlled active rear wing, every line is designed to cut through the air.

Utilizing carbon fiber extensively for body panels not only reduces weight but also improves responsiveness by lowering the center of gravity. Carbon fiber components include the fenders, hood, trunk lid replacement cover, door sills, front splitter, rear diffuser, and roof. Optional carbon fiber front and rear fascias further exemplify this commitment to lightweight innovation.

An available aero package, crafted from carbon fiber, incorporates underbody aerodynamics, blending pioneering motorsports features with cutting-edge technology. Aiding aerodynamic balance alongside the active rear wing are hydraulically controlled front flaps, an innovation that transcends racing norms.

The space previously occupied by a trunk now houses the semi-active suspension, a hydraulic control system, and a transaxle cooling system. This system employs a cover replacing the trunk lid and features air scoops, channeling airflow into the area and through the heat exchangers.

Anthony Colard, Ford Performance design manager, elaborates, "Our design team collaborated with the Mustang GT3 design team and aero experts, sharing insights between race car and road car. This design is driven by aerodynamics."

The interplay of these deliberately designed aerodynamic elements results in substantial downforce, evenly distributed between front and rear axles. This harmony empowers higher corner speeds, consistent control, and remarkable lap times on the world's most challenging circuits.

Unparalleled performance and technology

"The components were meticulously chosen and developed to achieve unparalleled lap time performance," emphasizes Greg Goodall, Ford chief program engineer. "Our goal for this project was crystal clear – outpace our previous achievements, aiming for a sub-7-minute Nürburgring time. This makes the Ford Mustang GTD the fastest roadgoing Mustang ever produced by Ford."

The Ford Mustang GTD harnesses the potential of a purpose-designed supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with dual air inlets and the debut of a dry-sump engine oil system for a road-ready Mustang. This innovative system ensures optimal engine lubrication during demanding cornering. With a redline exceeding 7,500 rpm, the engine generates a captivating note, enhanced by an available titanium active valve exhaust system. It marks Ford's most powerful street-legal Mustang to date.

Transmitting power from the engine to the rear wheels is a carbon fiber driveshaft, connected to an 8-speed rear transaxle, optimizing weight distribution close to 50/50 between front and rear. Rigorous powertrain dyno testing and simulated track drives led to the selection of this powertrain configuration.

The Ford Mustang GTD's outstanding performance is further enhanced by a state-of-the-art semi-active suspension capable of adjusting both spring rates and ride height. This technology, with its dual spring rate and height suspension system featuring adaptive spool valve dampers, enhances both on-road and on-track performance independently. Notably, the suspension settings allow for a lowered ride height of almost 40 mm in Track Mode, resulting in a significantly wider track than the standard Mustang GT.

With a short-long arm front suspension contributing to heightened lateral stiffness and improved kinematics, the rear suspension incorporates an integral link pushrod and rocker arm architecture. The inboard Adaptive Spool Valve shock absorbers and coil over springs are thoughtfully integrated into a sturdy, weight-efficient motorsport-style tubular subframe. This innovative layout ensures precise responsiveness to track conditions, with a pushrod to damper motion ratio of 1:1.
