About the Car

2025 Volvo EX40 Sand Dune Edition

Volvo Cars is updating its model names to reflect its commitment to a fully electric future, aiming to become a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030. The fully electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models have been renamed EX40 and EC40, aligning with the existing EX30, EX90, and EM90 models. This change streamlines the naming convention, making it easier for customers to identify fully electric models.

  • Volvo Cars is renaming its fully electric models, with the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge becoming EX40 and EC40, to align with its transition to a fully electric lineup by 2030.

  • In 2023, Volvo’s fully electric vehicle sales grew by 70%, now accounting for 16% of global sales, with the EX30, EX90, and EM90 models expanding the electric range to five models.

  • Volvo has removed the "Recharge" badging from its plug-in hybrid models, simplifying identification by using T6 and T8 suffixes to denote power levels.

  • A new Performance software pack is available for the EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants, increasing power output by 25kW and enhancing acceleration with unique pedal mapping.

  • The Performance software upgrade can be purchased via the Volvo Cars app or downloaded for previous model year 2024 C40 and fully electric XC40 Recharge vehicles.

  • Volvo's B5 mild hybrid petrol variants for the XC60 and XC90 now have a more efficient engine combustion cycle, potentially improving fuel economy by up to 4% for the XC60 and 2% for the XC90.

  • The new Black Edition of the EX40, EC40, and XC40 models features Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, and 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, offering a distinctive design option.

  • The EC40 and EX40 models come with Google built-in, smart interior storage solutions, and long electric ranges—up to 583 kilometers for the EC40 and 576 kilometers for the EX40.

  • The renaming of models and introduction of new software packs reflect Volvo’s focus on simplifying the product lineup while enhancing the performance of its electric and hybrid vehicles.

In 2023, fully electric cars made up 16% of Volvo's global sales, marking a 70% increase compared to 2022. With the introduction of the EX30, EX90, and EM90 this year, Volvo's electric lineup now includes five models, with more expected in the future.

The update also involves removing the Recharge badging from plug-in hybrid models, which are now identified by the T6 or T8 suffixes, indicating different power levels. This simplification helps customers distinguish between fully electric and hybrid models.

Volvo is also launching a new Performance software pack for the EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants, as well as for previous model years in select markets. This pack increases power output by 25kW, enhancing acceleration and providing a unique pedal mapping for faster response, along with a 'Performance' drive mode to maximize the vehicle's 325kW capability. The software will be available as an optional upgrade through the Volvo Cars app or can be purchased and downloaded for previous model year 2024 C40 and fully electric XC40 Recharge models.

In addition to these electric updates, Volvo is enhancing its hybrid products. The B5 mild hybrid petrol variants of the XC60 and XC90 now feature a more efficient engine combustion cycle, expected to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 4% for the XC60 and 2% for the XC90, based on WLTP cycle estimates.

Volvo is also introducing a Black Edition for the EX40, EC40, and XC40 models, inspired by the success of the XC60 Black Edition. These models come with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels in high gloss black, and the choice of Microtech or textile charcoal interiors.

The EC40, EX40, and XC40 continue to offer compelling features, including Google built-in and smart interior storage solutions. The EC40 provides an electric range of up to 583 kilometers, while the EX40 offers up to 576 kilometers, catering to the growing demand for long-range electric vehicles.
