2025 Toyota Wildlander

By Team Dailyrevs

Last month, spy shots revealed what appears to be a prototype of the much-anticipated 2026 Toyota RAV4. Recent reports suggest that its Chinese counterpart, the Toyota Wildlander, is set to debut at the Shanghai Auto Show this April. If accurate, this timeline could indicate that the introduction of the next-generation RAV4 may follow shortly thereafter.

The Toyota Wildlander, initially launched in late 2019 and entering the Chinese market in early 2020, shares its platform, interior, and most exterior body panels with the Toyota RAV4. However, the Wildlander features a distinct front-end design and unique taillights. Manufactured by GAC-Toyota, the Wildlander is differentiated from the RAV4, which is produced by FAW-Toyota.

Industry rumors suggest that the Shanghai Auto Show may host the unveiling of a next-generation Wildlander, potentially reflecting updates also planned for the next-generation RAV4. Both SUVs are expected to utilize a more advanced version of the TNGA-K platform, with improved structural and performance capabilities.

  • Spy shots of a prototype believed to be the 2026 Toyota RAV4 suggest that its Chinese counterpart, the Wildlander, could debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April.
  • The Toyota Wildlander, launched in late 2019, shares its platform, interior, and most exterior panels with the Toyota RAV4, but features a distinct front end and unique taillights.
  • Both the Toyota Wildlander and RAV4 are built on the TNGA-K platform, with the Wildlander produced by GAC-Toyota and the RAV4 manufactured by FAW-Toyota.
  • The 2025 Wildlander is rumored to adopt a redesigned body, though its differences from the next-generation RAV4 remain unclear.
  • The next-gen Wildlander is expected to feature updated hybrid powertrain options, including a self-charging hybrid, PHEV, and a more cost-efficient 2.0-liter hybrid option for the Chinese market.
  • Interior updates for the Toyota Wildlander will likely include dual 12.3-inch digital displays, a modernized dashboard, and enhanced tech features.
  • The timing of the 2026 RAV4’s introduction in relation to the next-gen Wildlander remains uncertain, but both models are set to be updated in 2025 with shared components.
  • The Suzuki Across, a rebadged sibling of the RAV4 and Wildlander available in Europe, shares design elements but might not transition to the next generation.
  • The Toyota Wildlander is tailored for the Chinese market, emphasizing localized styling and hybrid powertrain options to meet regional demands.
  • Both SUVs, the Wildlander and RAV4, represent Toyota’s focus on advancing hybrid technology while maintaining distinct identities across global markets.

The 2025 Wildlander is likely to feature a more efficient self-charging hybrid powertrain, alongside internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants. Reports also hint that a second, more affordable hybrid option could be introduced for the Chinese market. This setup may incorporate a smaller 2.0-liter engine as its base, contrasting with the 2.5-liter engine currently in use.

The bodywork of the next-generation Wildlander is expected to undergo a comprehensive redesign, although its resemblance to the forthcoming RAV4 remains uncertain. Interior updates are anticipated to include the latest technology, such as a dual 12.3-inch digital cockpit, paired with a more modern dashboard design to enhance functionality and aesthetics.

One key question remains: whether the 2026 Toyota RAV4 will be introduced before or after the debut of the next-generation Wildlander. Regardless, both models are set to launch in 2025 and will share many components, providing insights into their shared advancements and features.

In addition to its similarities with the RAV4, the Wildlander has another sibling model: the Suzuki Across, sold in Europe. The Suzuki Across shares its headlight design with the Wildlander, adopts the RAV4’s rear-end styling, and features a unique front bumper adorned with Suzuki badges. However, it is uncertain whether the Suzuki Across will transition into the new generation alongside its Toyota counterparts.
