Inspired by Toyota’s iconic ST185 and ST205 Celica GT-Four rally models, the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept integrates a complete powertrain upgrade with the turbocharged 3-cylinder, GR-FOUR AWD system from the GR Corolla. This concept aims to recall the legacy of these rally vehicles that captured the admiration of rally fans globally and in popular motorsport video games.

According to Paul Doleshal, Toyota’s general manager of Motorsports and Assets for North America, the idea behind this concept was to create a contemporary homage to the renowned rally cars of Toyota’s past. This project merges two distinguished models from the GR lineup, envisioning a modern interpretation of the celebrated Celica GT-Four with a refreshed powertrain and chassis.

Significant adjustments were necessary to fit the GR Corolla’s G16E-GTS engine and AWD system into the GR86’s chassis. Modifications included a custom subframe, new engine mounts, and alterations to the front suspension to integrate GR Corolla components. Custom coil-over dampers and fabricated control arms further refined the subframe adaptations, while adjustments to the GR86 steering rack ensured optimal handling.

At the rear, the GR Corolla’s differential and housing replaced the GR86’s original setup, preserving gear ratios, power distribution, and electronics. Adjustments to the GR Corolla’s rear axles allowed them to fit within the GR86’s frame.

Performance upgrades include a new intercooler for cooling the intake charge and an oil cooler to manage engine temperatures. A race ECU was installed for precise fuel, boost, and sensor monitoring, maintaining the GR Corolla’s original output of 300 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, with potential for future tuning.

The Halo White exterior design is accentuated by a retro red-and-green color scheme, along with Toyota and Toyota Gazoo Racing logos. Key features include large red rally mudflaps, a custom exhaust, and a Celica GT-Four-inspired spoiler for a classic rally aesthetic.

The interior is outfitted with a full roll cage painted in white, racing seats, and red six-point harnesses, in line with Toyota Gazoo Racing’s color theme. This concept underscores Toyota’s enduring commitment to rally racing, with Mike Tripp, Toyota’s group vice president of Marketing, emphasizing that it’s a tribute to Toyota rally fans.

Displayed alongside other Toyota vehicles and builds at the 2024 SEMA Show, the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept embodies Toyota’s strategy of fusing heritage with innovation.
