Volkswagen of America, Inc. revealed the remarkable three-row 2024 Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB in Huntington Beach, California. This distinctive vehicle pays homage to the iconic Volkswagen Microbus while incorporating modern elements and advanced electric vehicle (EV) technology. Designed specifically for the North American market, the ID Buzz LWB features a longer wheelbase, a more powerful battery, and increased horsepower compared to its European counterpart. With its retro-inspired design cues, cutting-edge features, and futuristic driving experience, the three-row ID Buzz LWB sets a new standard for electric vehicles. Volkswagen plans to release the ID Buzz LWB for sale in North America in 2024.
Spiritually resurrecting the Microbus for the electric era, Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, Inc., stated, “The zero-direct emission ID. Buzz is the spiritual reincarnation of the Microbus, reimagined for our electric future. It is practical, sustainable, and packaged in an unmistakably fun way that is classic Volkswagen. With its launch, the Bus will once again become our brand hero in America.” Just like its predecessor, the three-row ID Buzz LWB features a rear-mounted powerplant that delivers excellent traction, performance, and agility. The rear motor generates an impressive 282 horsepower, surpassing the European-spec model’s 201 hp. Moreover, the ID Buzz LWB boasts a larger 91 kWh (gross) battery, compared to the two-row version’s 82 kWh battery. Thanks to its efficient skateboard design, which places the battery in the floor, the vehicle offers optimized space utilization and enhanced handling by distributing a significant portion of its weight low in the structure. At launch, the three-row ID Buzz LWB will be available with all-wheel drive, boasting around 330 hp and dual motors. The vehicle features a multi-link rear suspension, as well as struts at the front, ensuring a comfortable and dynamic driving experience.
The new APP550 rear-mounted motor is equipped with a PMS (permanent magnet synchronous) design, offering a maximum torque of 406 pound-feet. It comes with a one-speed transmission and a new inverter for efficient power and control. The motor’s increased power, torque, and efficiency are achieved through various enhancements, such as stronger permanent magnets, a larger effective number of turns in the stator, water cooling for the stator, and a combined oil and water cooling system for improved thermal stability. With the upgraded electric motor, the ID Buzz LWB achieves a top speed of 99 mph, compared to the two-row model’s 90 mph.
Externally, the ID Buzz LWB retains its classic boxy shape with short overhangs, providing maximum utility within a compact footprint. It measures 192.4 inches in length, making it nearly 10 inches longer than the two-row variant. The added length comes from its 127.5-inch wheelbase, offering improved interior space. The vehicle has a width of 77.9 inches and a height of 74.6 inches, similar to the Atlas in width but taller by five inches. These dimensions represent a significant increase compared to the original Bus, which was approximately as long as a 2019 Beetle and slightly narrower. The ID Buzz LWB achieves a low coefficient of drag of 0.29, impressive for a vehicle of its shape.
Embracing the spirit of the original Bus, the ID Buzz LWB incorporates retro design cues while reinterpreting them for the future. The illuminated oversized VW logo, connected to the LED headlights, serves as an iconic symbol. The vehicle offers a range of bold exterior colors, including the lively Energetic Orange, Pomelo Yellow, and Mahi Green, along with new options such as Cabana Blue, Metro Silver, Lunar Grey, Starlight Black, and Pure White. These vibrant colors add to the vehicle’s playful and eye-catching appeal.
Moving to the interior, the ID Buzz LWB offers a spacious and versatile cabin that can comfortably accommodate up to seven passengers across three rows. The second-row seats can be individually adjusted and rotated up to 180 degrees, allowing for flexible seating configurations and creating a lounge-like atmosphere. The third-row seats can be folded flat to expand cargo space as needed. The cabin features high-quality materials, modern finishes, and a minimalist design aesthetic, creating a harmonious blend of retro charm and contemporary sophistication.
The advanced technology integrated into the ID Buzz LWB enhances both the driving experience and passenger comfort. The driver’s cockpit features a digital instrument cluster and a multifunction steering wheel, providing easy access to vehicle information and controls. The infotainment system includes a large touchscreen display with intuitive controls for navigation, media, and connectivity features. Passengers can enjoy a premium audio system, wireless charging pads, and multiple USB ports for convenient device charging.
One of the standout features of the ID Buzz LWB is its advanced autonomous driving capabilities. The vehicle is equipped with an array of sensors, cameras, and radar systems that enable semi-autonomous driving functions. These features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and parking assistance. While the ID Buzz LWB is designed to provide a seamless and enjoyable driving experience, the autonomous driving features add an extra layer of convenience and safety.
In terms of charging, the ID Buzz LWB supports both AC and DC fast charging. With DC fast charging, the vehicle can replenish its battery up to 80% in approximately 38 minutes, allowing for convenient long-distance travel. Additionally, Volkswagen plans to offer an extended range variant of the ID Buzz LWB, which will provide even greater driving range on a single charge.
Overall, the 2024 Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB combines the iconic design of the Microbus with modern electric technology and advanced features. It offers a spacious and versatile interior, impressive performance, and a range of cutting-edge technologies. The ID Buzz LWB aims to capture the hearts of electric vehicle enthusiasts and evoke nostalgia for the classic Volkswagen Bus, while embracing the future of sustainable and enjoyable transportation.
