Kai Grünitz, a member of the Brand Board of Management for Development, emphasizes that the ID.7 sets a new benchmark for efficiency within Volkswagen's modular electric drive matrix (MEB). With an expected range of up to 700 kilometers (WLTP), this is achieved through superior aerodynamics and enhanced efficiency in powertrain and thermal management. The ID.7 features a 210 kW (286 PS) electric motor, making it the most powerful and highest-torque motor in the ID. series. Developed and produced in Kassel, Germany, this motor, known internally as APP550, is available across all battery sizes.

The ID.7's new electric drive system is optimized for energy efficiency, with expected WLTP ranges of up to 700 kilometers and charging capacities reaching around 200 kW. This design enhances the ID.7's appeal for frequent long-distance drivers and fleet users.

Design and Aerodynamics

The ID.7, nearly five meters in length, follows aerodynamic principles, featuring a roofline that slopes gracefully towards the rear in a coupé style, contributing to a low drag coefficient of approximately 0.23, depending on the vehicle's configuration. The extended wheelbase and short overhangs provide ample interior space for all passengers.

Advanced Operating and Display Features

Volkswagen introduces a new operating and display system in the ID.7, incorporating customer feedback to improve the user interface. Standard features include a 15-inch infotainment screen, an augmented reality head-up display, a restructured air conditioning interface, customizable buttons, and a backlit touch slider.

The ID.7 offers several exclusive options, such as new massage seats and an electronically dimmable panoramic sunroof, which can be controlled via touch or natural voice commands through the IDA voice assistant. The optional front seats, another innovation for Volkswagen, feature adaptive Climatronic settings for cooling, heating, and drying, along with a massage function certified by the German Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR). Additionally, a 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 14 high-end speakers, including a front center speaker and a subwoofer in the luggage compartment, enhances the audio quality.

Enhanced Assistance Systems

The ID.7 is equipped with Travel Assist, utilizing swarm data to assist with lateral and longitudinal control as needed. This feature, developed with CARIAD, Volkswagen's software subsidiary, includes the option for automated lane changes on highways at speeds above 90 km/h. For parking, the ID.7 offers assisted parking with memory function for distances up to 50 meters, controlled either from inside the vehicle or via a smartphone app.

Volkswagen’s Electric Strategy

The ID.7 is a key component of Volkswagen's accelerated electric vehicle strategy, with ten new models planned by 2026. This year will see the introduction of the updated ID.3, the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz, and the ID.7, followed by an electric compact SUV and the production version of the ID. 2all, priced under 25,000 euros. These additions will position Volkswagen as a leader in the electric vehicle market. Production for the European and North American markets will take place at Volkswagen's Emden plant in Germany, while local production will serve the Chinese market.
