The 2024 Toyota GR Yaris H2 Concept showcases significant advancements in technical, design, and construction, elevating its driving experience. The original GR Yaris, launched in 2020, was met with widespread acclaim for its rally-inspired performance. Over the past three years, Toyota has further refined this model, enhancing its power, responsiveness, and driving engagement.
The new GR Yaris inherits the race-proven attributes of the GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID competition car from the World Rally Championship. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing engineers have collaborated with racing professionals to enhance the GR Yaris, ensuring it remains a "driver-first" car, delivering a superior experience from ignition.
Key upgrades include a more powerful turbocharged three-cylinder engine, now delivering 280 DIN hp and 390 Nm of torque. A new eight-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission offers rapid gear changes, complementing the existing six-speed manual gearbox. The bespoke chassis is reinforced, and the cockpit layout has been redesigned for a more authentic sports car feel, with enhanced suspension for greater handling control under high loads.
The 2024 GR Yaris retains the original model's success factors but elevates them. It is available in a single "Circuit" specification, featuring a cooling performance pack with an additional sub-radiator, intercooler spray, and modified air intake. The new model will be available across Europe from Summer 2024.
GR YARIS: THE STORY SO FAR
Developed by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, the GR Yaris benefits from World Rally Championship expertise. Since its 2020 launch, over 40,000 units have been sold worldwide, half of which were in Europe. The GR Yaris exemplifies Toyota's commitment to developing superior cars through motorsport, with its design and engineering influenced by WRC experiences.
The GR Yaris features a new engine, electronic all-wheel drive system, and tailor-made chassis. The response to the production car exceeded Toyota’s expectations, with over 20,000 units sold in Europe and a 99% customer satisfaction rate. The Circuit Pack version is the most popular, hence the focus on this specification for the new model. The GR Yaris is recognized as a unique and classic sports car.
POWERTRAIN: MORE POWER, MORE TORQUE, MORE CONTROL
The turbocharged three-cylinder engine now offers 280 DIN hp and 390 Nm of torque, maintaining its status as the world's most powerful three-cylinder production unit. Durability has been ensured through rigorous testing in race and rally conditions. Enhancements include a strengthened valvetrain, new exhaust valve material, and increased fuel injection pressure. Lightweight pistons and a new intake pressure sensor further improve performance.
A new eight-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission is available, designed for fast gear changes and improved driver focus on steering and braking. The transmission's software anticipates gear shifting needs, providing a driving experience akin to professional drivers.
GR-FOUR ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
The GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system offers precise front/rear torque control, managed by two limited-slip differentials. The driver can adjust the AWD settings to suit conditions or preferences using a mode switch. The system allows a torque balance from full front-wheel drive to full rear-wheel drive, providing a performance edge over on-demand AWD systems.
CHASSIS AND HANDLING
The GR Yaris' lightweight body has increased rigidity, enhancing chassis and steering response. The platform combines elements from Toyota's GA-B and GA-C structures. The suspension has been strengthened, with front and rear adjustments for optimal performance under high loads. The braking system includes ventilated front and rear discs with high-friction pads, suitable for circuit driving.
COMPETITION-INSPIRED DRIVER’S COCKPIT
The driver's cockpit has been redesigned with input from professional race and rally drivers, improving control positioning and visibility. The instrumentation includes a new 12.3-inch digital combimeter with sports performance-focused displays. The driver's seat and steering wheel positions have been optimized for competition driving.
EXTERIOR DESIGN
The GR Yaris retains its distinctive three-door design, with revisions aimed at improving downforce, aerodynamics, and grip. Changes include a new steel mesh for the lower grille, larger side grille openings, and relocated rear fog and reversing lights. A new exterior color option, Precious Metal, joins the established color range.
DEVELOPED IN THE SPIRITUAL HOME OF WORLD RALLYING
The GR Yaris was developed at the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team’s base in Jyväskylä, Finland. This location provides access to challenging roads for vehicle testing, aligning with Toyota's philosophy that "the road shapes the driver as well as the car."
SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT FEATURES
The new GR Yaris comes standard with the third generation of Toyota Safety Sense, offering a comprehensive suite of systems to detect potential hazards and provide assistance. The equipment includes the Toyota Smart Connect + multimedia system, fully digital driver's combimeter, and advanced safety features.
EXPLORING FUTURE POSSIBILITIES: THE HYDROGEN-FUELLED GR YARIS
Toyota has converted the GR Yaris' turbocharged three-cylinder engine to run on hydrogen, demonstrating how internal combustion engines can be adapted to use carbon-neutral hydrogen fuel. This engineering study incorporates elements from the Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric sedan.
