Maximizing Decarbonisation in Vehicle Lifecycle

Building on the progress from the Scenic Vision H2-Tech concept, the Renault Emblème reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to conventional vehicles. The project focuses on using low-carbon materials, renewable energy sources, and sustainable production processes. The overall goal is to limit the vehicle’s total carbon footprint to just 5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over its entire life cycle. This is achieved by integrating recycled materials, natural resources, and re-used parts, along with a circular production approach.

Efficiency and Aerodynamic Design

Renault Emblème introduces a new design language that prioritizes efficiency without sacrificing style. The vehicle's exterior design blends sportiness and elegance with advanced aerodynamic features. Innovations like camera-based rearview mirrors, concealed windscreen wipers, recessed e-latch handles, and full-disc wheels all contribute to reduced drag. These elements were optimized using digital twin technology, with input from the BWT Alpine F1 Team to achieve a drag coefficient (Cx) of 0.25.

Shooting Brake Design for Family Travel

With its shooting brake design, the Renault Emblème combines the practicality of an estate with the sleekness of a coupé. The dichroic green bodywork adds visual appeal, changing its appearance based on the viewing angle. Measuring 4.80 meters in length and offering a wheelbase of 2.90 meters, the Emblème Concept is designed for comfortable family travel, providing ample space for passengers and luggage.

Reducing Weight for Better Efficiency

To minimize environmental impact, Renault's design team worked meticulously to reduce unnecessary weight. Weighing just 1,750 kg (including batteries), the Emblème is lighter than many hybrid SUVs or electric vehicles in its class. By cutting weight, Renault improves both energy efficiency and overall performance, lowering the emissions footprint throughout the vehicle's life cycle.

Innovative Dual Powertrain

The Renault Emblème Concept features a versatile dual powertrain, combining a conventional rechargeable battery with a hydrogen fuel cell. The electric motor, powered by a 40 kWh NMC battery, offers enough range for daily commutes, while the 30 kW hydrogen fuel cell extends the range for long-distance travel. With a hydrogen tank of 2.8 kg, the vehicle can cover up to 1,000 km, making it ideal for longer trips with minimal refueling stops.

Collaborative Development for Decarbonisation

Renault collaborated with over 20 partners, including Ampere, to meet its ambitious decarbonisation goals for the Emblème. This collaborative approach allowed Renault to integrate cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, resulting in a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions. This method reinforces Renault’s commitment to innovation, ensuring the entire ecosystem contributes to the process of making decarbonised mobility a reality.

Advanced Powertrain for Low-Carbon Performance

The 160 kW wound-rotor electric motor in the Renault Emblème is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact. It operates without the use of rare earth materials and is powered by a smaller, more environmentally friendly battery. The vehicle also uses a hydrogen fuel cell to generate additional power for long journeys, achieving a fuel efficiency of around 60%, with water as the only byproduct.

Range and Efficiency on Long Journeys

With its innovative powertrain, the Renault Emblème can travel up to 1,000 km on a single charge and hydrogen refuel. The hydrogen fuel cell takes only five minutes to refill, allowing the vehicle to cover long distances with minimal interruptions. For instance, on a journey from Paris to Marseille, 75% of the electricity consumed is generated by the fuel cell, ensuring efficient and low-carbon travel.
