Chinese automaker Changan has offered a sneak peek into its upcoming production model, the CD701 concept, introduced under the Qiyuan brand. This innovative concept blurs the lines between an SUV and a pickup truck, and it's set to make its way to production lines next year.
The CD701 concept made its grand entrance at the Changan Automobile Science and Technology Ecological Conference in Chongqing, China, where it garnered attention as a potential ‘E0’ market release. It proudly stands on Changan's SDA smart electric vehicle platform, presenting itself as a 5-seat SUV featuring a sleek and elegantly sloping roofline.
In the realm of electric vehicles, the CD701's front design embraces simplicity, with C-shaped LED daytime running lights and compact headlights. What sets it apart is the absence of a traditional grille, replaced by a dynamic display showcasing battery percentage and range. D-shaped LEDs on the front bumper add a touch of sophistication, reminiscent of the VW T-Roc's DRLs.
While the front maintains a classic charm, the sides and rear are truly distinctive. The CD701 boasts imposing wheels beneath squared-off arches, concealed door handles, camera-equipped side mirrors, and a roofline that extends over a high-riding decklid. Astonishingly, it transforms into a pickup truck by sliding the rear glass panel upwards over the roof.
The rear view showcases a semi-circular LED light bar and another informative display, mirroring the front's battery details. Inside, the concept aligns with contemporary EV expectations, offering a spacious infotainment display, a minimalist dashboard, a head-up display, and a flat-top steering wheel.
The instrument panel takes a back seat, giving prominence to the head-up display, central control screen, and a foldable entertainment screen for the co-pilot. Notably, the steering wheel's top is flat, a unique touch in modern automotive design.
Changan's in-house development shines through as the vehicle's 'brain,' enabling features like automated charging station searches, autonomous charging, and voice interaction. The CD701 is set to make history by becoming the world's first vehicle equipped with "vehicle satellite communication" technology, ensuring global connectivity and uninterrupted internet access.
Changan's remarkable performance in 2023 reflects its growth, with 1.633 million vehicles sold by August, marking an 11.43% year-on-year increase. The significant boost came from new energy vehicles, experiencing a remarkable 92.9% surge. Looking ahead, Qiyuan plans to introduce 10 new vehicles by 2025, while Changan aims for a grand annual sales target of 5 million vehicles by 2030, with 1.5 million of those bearing the Qiyuan brand's mark.
