2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Tribute to Jo Siffert
With the 911 GT3 RS Tribute to Jo Siffert, Porsche honors the late Swiss racing driver and commemorates the first victory of the legendary 917 almost 55 years ago. On 10 August 1969, Siffert and Kurt Ahrens secured the first international 1,000-kilometre race win at the Österreichring near Zeltweg. Initially considered difficult to drive due to its high speeds and aerodynamics, the 917 achieved its first race win with this victory.

Joseph “Jo” Siffert holds cult status in Switzerland 50 years after his death. The Fribourg native was a talented, charismatic racing driver who competed in 298 races over 11 years, often participating in multiple races during the same weekend. “Jo Siffert, together with Kurt Ahrens, kicked off the success story of the 917 by winning at Zeltweg in 1969. His passion for racing aligns perfectly with our brand core – Driven by Dreams,” says Michael Glinski, CEO of Porsche Schweiz AG.
The family of Jo Siffert was closely involved in the creation of this special 911 GT3 RS. Jo’s son Philippe, a former Formula Ford and Formula 3 racer, and his grandson Jérémy attended the project workshop in Zuffenhausen. Philippe Siffert remarked, “Witnessing the creation of this Porsche in honor of my father was extremely exciting. The Porsche Sonderwunsch Manufaktur team has transformed an already rare 911 GT3 RS into a unique piece infused with the spirit of Jo Siffert.”
Countless Nods to the Porsche 917
“This tribute model is inspirational: its design is based on the 917 that Jo Siffert and Kurt Ahrens drove to victory at the Österreichring almost 55 years ago,” says Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualisation & Classic at Porsche AG. “The one-off also showcases the extensive exterior and interior customisation options available through the Sonderwunsch programme.”
Predominantly painted in Pure White with Viper Green accents on the front wings and parts of the front end, this car draws from the “Paint to Sample” programme. The large rear wing’s middle section is painted in Viper Green, and the start number “29” is displayed on the doors, front bonnet, under the rear wing, and on the tyre valve caps. The classic Porsche lettering with striped design on the doors and side sections mirrors the original vehicle.
Attention to detail is evident with the contemporary sponsor decals reproduced with support from Bosch and Shell. The Bosch decal with the spark plug is positioned on the rear wheel arches, while the Shell decal is below the rear window by the service flaps for oil and coolant. The silhouette of the 917KH can be seen on the centre lock of the satin black magnesium wheels and the sideplates of the rear wing. A special badge in the helmet design, bearing Jo Siffert’s name and signature, is on the B-pillars.
Interior and Custom Features
The interior exudes a racing atmosphere with Race-Tex in Black and Guards Red. The helmet motif is embroidered in the headrests, and the door entry guards feature the 917 silhouette combined with Siffert’s signature. Even the vehicle key is customized, with side bolsters painted in Pure White or Viper Green, and the 917 silhouette printed in contrasting colors. Jo Siffert’s autograph is embossed on the centre console cover and the leather key case.
About the Porsche 917 with Jo Siffert at the Wheel
Former senior race engineer Peter Falk recalled in 2018, “We owe the 1969 World Sportscar Championship in large part to Jo Siffert. He was by far the fastest man on our team.” Porsche won seven out of ten races that season, with Siffert taking five victories with Briton Brian Redman and one with Kurt Ahrens – the one on 10 August 1969 in Zeltweg. “Our victory in Zeltweg was the start of the 917’s success story, and it was an honor to share the cockpit with Jo,” says Ahrens.
In 1968, the FIA changed the Manufacturer’s World Championship regulations, increasing the displacement limit to five liters and reducing the homologation requirement to 25 cars. The three-liter Porsche 908 was no longer competitive, prompting the creation of the 917. The 917's record of success is legendary: it won the Sports Car World Championship title in 1969, and Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood achieved triumph at Le Mans in 1970. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep repeated this success in 1971. George Follmer and Mark Donohue dominated the North American CanAm series in 1972 and 1973 with turbo versions 917/10 and 917/30.
Jo Siffert did not witness these later successes; he died in a fatal accident at the age of 35 at the Formula 1 race at Brands Hatch (UK) on 24 October 1971.
