Polestar (Nasdaq: PSNY) is unveiling a significant transformation for the 2024 model year of the 5-door electric performance fastback, the Polestar 2. This premium compact EV is getting a fresh, high-tech front end inspired by the design language introduced with the Polestar 3. Alongside this, it boasts substantial performance improvements, new electric motors, enhanced batteries, sustainability enhancements, and, for the very first time in a Polestar, rear-wheel drive. Polestar 2 initially burst onto the scene in 2019, carving out a niche in the fiercely competitive premium EV market. It seamlessly blends Scandinavian design, impeccable usability, spirited driving dynamics, and a strong commitment to sustainability. Notably, it was the world's first car to feature an infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS with Google integration—a feature that continues to evolve, setting industry standards. This unique combination of attributes rapidly propelled the Polestar 2 to customer favorite status, available in 27 markets globally, and crossing the 100,000 unit production milestone in late 2022.

Elevated Design and Technology The introduction of the SmartZone in the Polestar 2 marks a transition from merely breathing to seeing, emphasizing the technological prowess of Polestar vehicles. Similar to the Polestar 3, the SmartZone now houses critical active safety features, including the front-facing camera and mid-range radar.

The Performance Pack's 20-inch forged alloy wheels have been meticulously updated to align the Polestar 2 with its sportier sibling, the Polestar 3.

New Motors, Enhanced Ride, and Rear-Wheel Drive The next-generation electric motors and inverters are now standard across all Polestar 2 variants. These upgrades bring significant gains in both efficiency and performance. Single-motor versions now embrace rear-wheel drive, powered by a newly developed permanent magnet motor and silicon carbide inverter. This motor generates up to 220 kW of power (up from 170 kW) and delivers high torque (490 Nm, up from 330 Nm), resulting in a quicker 0-100 km/h sprint time, now at 6.2 seconds.

The dual-motor variant features a rear-drive bias, enhancing driving pleasure and performance. A re-balanced drivetrain setup and torque-ratio, with a new rear motor as the primary drive source, delivers a total system output of 310 kW and 740 Nm (up from 300 kW and 660 Nm). This configuration offers vastly improved traction, higher efficiency, and enhanced performance, with a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Furthermore, the front motor can disengage when not needed, seamlessly re-engaging when more power is required.

The optional Performance Pack takes power to 350 kW, with a blistering 0-100 km/h time of just 4.2 seconds. Additionally, this power boost can be obtained as a downloadable over-the-air performance software upgrade for eligible Long Range Dual motor models.

Extended Range and Faster Charging Most Polestar 2 versions now feature upgraded lithium-ion batteries, enhancing efficiency, capacity, and charging times. Long-range versions are equipped with 82 kWh batteries from CATL, featuring 27 modules. Standard-range versions maintain a 69 kWh capacity with 24 modules, now supplied by LG Chem.

These updated batteries benefit from a redesigned battery disconnect unit, upgraded busbars, and improved cell chemistry, enabling faster charging rates of up to 205 kW DC for long-range batteries and 135 kW for the standard-range battery.

Range improvements have been realized across all versions due to larger and improved batteries, combined with optimized power delivery. The Long Range Dual motor variant, in particular, achieves an impressive WLTP range of up to 592 km, a significant increase of 105 km.

The Standard Range Single motor version now boasts up to 518 km of WLTP range, an increase of 40 km, while the Long Range Single motor variant can achieve up to 635 km WLTP, an 84 km improvement.

Enhanced Performance with Reduced Emissions Despite the addition of larger batteries, more potent motors, extended range, and heightened performance, carbon emissions for models equipped with the new 82 kWh battery have reduced by 1.1 tonnes to 5.9 tonnes per car, thanks to advancements in cell chemistry. A comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) is scheduled for later in 2023.

Revised Standard Equipment for Added Value Standard equipment in the Polestar 2 has been thoughtfully revised to enhance overall value and convenience. Driver Awareness features now come standard, including Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steering support, Cross Traffic Alert with brake support, and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation. Additionally, you'll benefit from the 360-degree surround-view camera and automatic dimming exterior mirrors. To top it off, the wireless phone charger is now a standard feature across all versions.
