The 2018 model generation has received exterior, interior, technological, and equipment upgrades, arriving at European dealerships in July 2023. The engine lineup is now fully electrified, featuring mild hybrids with a 48-volt system and Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), as well as fourth-generation plug-in hybrids. Most models boast more power than their predecessors, with the GLE 400 e 4MATIC seeing the largest increase of 30 kW.

Enhancements in the Driving Assistance Package include improved features for Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist. The Parking Package with a 360° camera3 aids drivers in maneuvering into and out of parallel and perpendicular parking spots. Equipment: Tailored for Off-Road Use and Trailer Towing

While most GLE drivers typically navigate paved roads or mild to moderately challenging off-road terrain, Mercedes-Benz has revamped the Off-Road Engineering Package for GLE's exclusively combustion-engine models to offer it at a significantly reduced price. The package features an underride guard and, when paired with the optional AIRMATIC air suspension, provides an additional 30 millimeters of ground clearance.

The latest MBUX generation's "Off-Road Mode" visually displays special content such as gradient, roll angle, compass, and steering angle. When combined with the optional Parking Package and 360° camera, the "transparent bonnet" function is activated. With Off-Road Mode enabled, the central display provides a virtual view beneath the vehicle's front, including the front wheels and steering position, using images from the 360° camera. The "transparent bonnet" is invaluable for detecting obstacles like large rocks or deep potholes, and it also comes in handy when driving over ramps or crests.

The GLE boasts a high towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes4 and a tongue weight of up to 140 kg, thanks to its all-wheel drive and traction-focused gear ratio. The fully electric trailer coupling adds convenience, allowing the ball neck and socket for the trailer electrics to be deployed or retracted at the touch of a button. For those who use the coupling for purposes other than towing, such as carrying bicycles, the trailer coupling includes two extra bolts on the ball neck for securely attaching a suitable bike rack with a 100 kg load capacity, accommodating e-bikes as well.

The GLE and GLE Coupé now feature a Trailer route planner for the navigation system, enabling occupants to plan suitable routes for their predefined trailer without significant detours or time loss. The planner takes route widths, heights, and weight restrictions into account, with the trailer defined via the MBUX Trailer menu. This menu automatically appears when a trailer is electrically connected to the vehicle, allowing users to choose between bike racks and two trailer sizes, as well as set their desired speed. The Trailer route planner considers this information, and Traffic Sign Assist displays speed limits specifically for the car-trailer combination. Additionally, if DISTRONIC and Active Speed Limit Assist are activated, the vehicle only accelerates up to the relevant speed limit.

Enhanced Trailer Manoeuvring Assist with Camera-Based System

The improved Trailer Manoeuvring Assist now utilizes a camera-based system, making it compatible with trailers equipped with their own stabilization devices against rolling motions. This advancement makes manoeuvring with a trailer even simpler, safer, and more convenient. The system automatically controls the towing vehicle's steering angle up to a speed of 5 km/h and a 15% uphill gradient. Seamlessly integrated into MBUX, it can be operated intuitively through the touchscreen.

Besides stabilizing the combination while reversing, the system can also guide it around freely selectable bends of up to 90 degrees. The towing vehicle's steering is automatically operated to maintain the selected angle, allowing for more precise trailer positioning. Drivers can choose a corresponding function when the trailer has reached the desired direction and must reverse in a straight line. The entire manoeuvring process can be monitored from various camera perspectives on the central display, with dynamic guide lines indicating the path ahead and the vehicle's width.

Upgraded surround sensors enhance parking assistance, providing better support for drivers when manoeuvring. Integrated into MBUX, these systems can be operated more intuitively and quickly. Active Steering Assist remains activated in towing mode, unlike in the previous model, and helps drivers maintain their lane automatically, even when cornering slightly.

Exterior Design: New Daytime Running Light Signatures

The GLE SUV and GLE Coupé now feature a more contemporary appearance with several exterior design updates. These include a new front bumper, horizontal louvres with chrome inserts in the GLE's radiator grille, and a horizontal chrome fin in the outer air intakes' grille. The headlamps' light flare is a signature Mercedes-Benz characteristic. The standard LED High-Performance headlamps have two light points, while the optional MULTIBEAM LED has four. Additionally, the taillight interiors have been redesigned for both the GLE and GLE Coupé.

The AMG Line exterior is now standard on the GLE Coupé, and new color options include sodalite blue metallic and MANUFAKTUR alpine grey solid. The range of light-alloy wheels in 19- and 20-inch sizes has been expanded with aerodynamically optimized options, and the AMG Line exterior now offers a new 21-inch wheel design. Ambient lighting with animated Mercedes-Benz pattern projection is available as a new optional feature.

Interior: Refined Details from Mercedes-Maybach GLS and Mercedes S-Class

The GLE and GLE Coupé now include the latest-generation steering wheel with sensor surfaces on the horizontal spokes, allowing drivers to control the driver and central displays from the steering wheel. The premium audio system Burmester® surround sound system now features personal sound setup and Dolby Atmos immersive audio experience. The "Online Music" service5 integrates numerous music streaming providers into the MBUX infotainment system, with 13 speakers, 13 separate amplifier channels, and a 590-watt system output. The optional ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL monitors air quality using air quality and fine particle sensors, intelligently switching between fresh air and air-recirculation modes based on measurement values.

Up-to-Date MBUX: Intuitive Operation and Learning Capabilities

The GLE and GLE Coupé now feature the second generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, making their interiors more digital and intelligent. Both hardware and software advancements enable control of numerous vehicle and comfort functions on the LCD screens with stunning display views. The driver and central displays provide a comprehensive, visually appealing experience, presenting information clearly and concisely. Users can personalize the appearance with three display styles (classic, sporty, discreet) and four modes (navigation, assistance, service, off-road).

Hey Mercedes: The Evolving Voice Assistant

The voice assistant "Hey Mercedes" becomes more interactive and capable of learning by activating online services through the Mercedes me App. Additionally, users can initiate certain actions without the activation keyword "Hey Mercedes," such as answering a phone call. The assistant can also explain vehicle functions, provide assistance with connecting a smartphone via Bluetooth or locating a first-aid kit, and control other vehicle functions like interior lighting or blinds using voice commands.

Smart Home: Remote Control Comfort

The GLE SUV and GLE Coupé become mobile control centers for home automation with the MBUX Smart Home function6. Smart Home refers to Wi-Fi, sensors, and actuators that make a home more intelligent and communicative, allowing remote monitoring and control of temperature, lights, shutters, and electrical appliances. Motion detectors and window contacts keep users informed about visitors.

Users can communicate with their Smart Home via the MBUX Voice Assistant, which supports numerous devices from major Smart Home providers. The Smart Home integration into MBUX can also help reduce energy consumption at home.

Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates: Latest Software

When a new software update for the GLE or GLE Coupé is available from Mercedes-Benz, a message appears in MBUX. The update is downloaded and installed in the background, with user consent required for activation. Over-the-air updates can also add new features to previously sold vehicles.

Users can further enhance their experience by adding new functions through the Mercedes me Store, such as music streaming services or In-Car-Office. Subscription services can also be renewed or added directly online.

Powertrain: Comprehensive Electrification

The GLE SUV and GLE Coupé are now fully electrified, thanks to mild hybrids with 48-volt technology and Integrated Starter Generator, as well as plug-in hybrids upgraded to the latest fourth generation. The plug-in hybrids feature a permanent 100 kW synchronous machine, with a system output of up to 280 kW and a system torque of up to 750 Nm. With slightly increased electric ranges of up to 109 kilometers7 (WLTP), most daily journeys can be completed using electric power only. The improved hybrid drive program prioritizes electric driving in urban areas.

An 11 kW charger is now included in the plug-in hybrid models for charging from home AC power or a three-phase wallbox. Additionally, a 60 kW DC fast charger is available as an optional feature.
