2024 Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV
- The 2024 Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, a series plug-in hybrid, made its European debut at the Brussels Motor Show, joining Mazda's electrified lineup.
- The MX-30 R-EV features a 17.8kWh battery, providing a 53-mile pure electric range, and uses an 830cc single-rotor petrol engine as a generator for extended driving.
- The rotary engine technology, with over 50 years of Mazda expertise, allows for a compact, lightweight design placed alongside the generator and motor in the engine bay.
- Combining the battery and a 50-litre fuel tank, the vehicle offers a total range of over 373 miles and a WLTP CO2 output of just 21g/km.
- The MX-30 R-EV supports both AC and rapid DC charging, with AC charging taking about 50 minutes and DC rapid charging around 25 minutes.
- The vehicle offers three drive modes: Normal, EV, and Charge, with a 125kW/170ps output providing improved acceleration over the 145ps fully electric MX-30.
- Available in Prime-Lime, Exclusive-Line, Makoto, and the limited Edition R trims, the Edition R features a unique Jet Black and Maroon Rouge color scheme.
- The new 8C rotary engine is an 830cc single rotor with a 120mm rotor radius and 76mm rotor width, utilizing direct fuel injection and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for enhanced efficiency.
- The high-output 122kW/166ps electric motor delivers up to 260Nm of torque, maintaining the same engaging driving experience as the pure-electric MX-30.

Rotary Engine Technology and Performance
Equipped with a 17.8kWh battery, the MX-30 R-EV offers a 53-mile pure electric range. Mazda's unique rotary engine technology enables longer drives without range anxiety. The 830cc single-rotor petrol engine acts as a generator, ensuring a seamless EV driving experience without a direct mechanical connection to the wheels.
Design and Engineering Excellence
Mazda's extensive experience with rotary engines led to the selection of this compact, lightweight powerplant. Placed alongside the generator and high-output motor, the rotary engine fits neatly in the engine bay. The combination of a 17.8kWh battery and a 50-litre fuel tank provides a total range of over 373 miles, with a WLTP CO2 output of just 21g/km. The vehicle supports both AC and rapid DC charging, with 3-phase AC charging taking about 50 minutes and DC rapid charging around 25 minutes.
Drive Modes and Performance
The MX-30 R-EV offers three drive modes: Normal, EV, and Charge. With a 125kW/170ps output, it delivers better acceleration than the 145ps fully electric MX-30. Available in the UK this summer, the R-EV comes in Prime-Lime, Exclusive-Line, Makoto, and the limited Edition R trims. The Edition R, limited to 400 units, features a unique Jet Black and Maroon Rouge color scheme.
Rotary Engine Specifications
The new 8C rotary engine is an 830cc single rotor with a 120mm rotor radius and 76mm rotor width. The engine's compact size and aluminum construction make it over 15kg lighter than the twin-rotor Renesis engine. Direct fuel injection and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
Driving Experience and Flexibility
The MX-30 R-EV maintains the same engaging driving experience as the pure-electric MX-30, with a high-output 122kW/166ps electric motor delivering up to 260Nm of torque. The vehicle's three driving modes allow drivers to adapt to different conditions, ensuring a balance of performance and efficiency. Normal mode provides electric drive as long as the battery has charge, while EV mode ensures exclusive electric driving until the battery is depleted. Charge mode helps reserve battery power for zero-emission urban driving.
Mazda's Multi Solution Approach
Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda Motors UK, highlighted the MX-30 R-EV as an example of Mazda’s innovative spirit. The R-EV offers customers the flexibility of electric driving with the convenience of a generator for longer journeys. The vehicle combines electrification with advanced internal combustion technologies to meet diverse customer needs.
