About the Car

2024 Kia Pride EV Concept

2024 Kia Pride EV Concept

Kia UK introduced the 2024 Kia Pride EV Concept, an electric restomod created to celebrate the company’s 80th anniversary. This unique concept, revealed at the Bicester Heritage Scramble on October 6, was a collaboration between Kia UK and Electrogenic, a British firm specializing in EV powertrain conversions.

  • The 2024 Kia Pride EV Concept is an electric restomod created to celebrate Kia’s 80th anniversary.
  • Developed in collaboration between Kia UK and Electrogenic, the Pride EV is based on a 1996 Kia Pride 1.3 LX.
  • The conversion swaps the original petrol engine with a fully electric powertrain, featuring twin 10kWh battery packs and a compact electric motor.
  • The Pride EV retains its vintage design, including the original 12-inch steel wheels, while adopting modern elements like White Pearl paint from Kia’s EV lineup.
  • Inside, the Pride EV features updates like lime green accents on the seats and floor mats, inspired by the Kia EV6 GT.
  • The electric motor delivers 107bhp and 173lb-ft of torque, a significant increase from the original engine’s performance.
  • The vehicle offers a range of up to 120 miles on a single charge in Eco mode, with a charging time of around six hours using a Type 2 charger.
  • Three driving modes are available—Eco, Sport, and Auto—providing different levels of performance and efficiency for various driving conditions.
  • The Pride EV retains its original manual transmission and analog dashboard, with updates for the electric system like a battery charge indicator.
  • The project is part of Kia UK’s special series of unique builds, following other one-off models like the Stinger GT420 and Soul EV beach buggy.

Pride EV: Kia’s Upcycled Anniversary Special

The Pride EV Concept is based on a 1996 Kia Pride 1.3 LX from Kia UK’s heritage fleet. The car has been transformed with a fully electric powertrain, replacing the original internal combustion components while retaining its five-speed manual transmission and drive shafts. The Pride EV remains road-legal and is designed to be as engaging to drive as an early hot hatch, offering modern performance while maintaining its original 1980s styling.

Design Updates and Electric Performance

The Pride EV retains its vintage 12-inch steel wheels and original exterior design, but it has been updated with a White Pearl paint finish, similar to current Kia EV models like the EV6 and EV9. The car's front and rear lights have been upgraded for better visibility. Inside, the Pride’s grey cloth interior has been refreshed with lime green accents on the seats and floor mats, inspired by the Kia EV6 GT.

Enhanced Power and Torque

The 2024 Kia Pride EV Concept is powered by a compact electric motor, replacing the original 1.3-litre petrol engine. The new setup includes twin 10kWh battery packs, which provide the vehicle with 107bhp and 173lb-ft of torque—a significant improvement from the original engine’s 60bhp and 87lb-ft. The motor drives the front wheels through the original manual transmission, updated with a performance clutch to handle the increased torque. The conversion from petrol to electric power resulted in only a slight weight gain, with the car now weighing 870kg, just 20kg more than the original.

Battery and Charging

The Pride EV is equipped with Type 2 charging and a 3.3kW on-board charger, allowing the car to recharge from 1% to 100% in about six hours. It offers a range of up to 120 miles in Eco mode, depending on driving conditions. The battery packs are strategically placed to maintain good weight distribution, improving the car’s agility.

Driving Modes: Eco, Sport, and Auto

The Pride EV offers three driving modes: Eco, Sport, and Auto. In Eco mode, the car produces 60bhp and 87lb-ft of torque, making it suitable for daily driving and maximizing range. Sport mode boosts the output to the motor’s maximum of 107bhp and 173lb-ft of torque, providing more dynamic performance and acceleration. Auto mode offers a balance between the two, with smoother acceleration and moderate regenerative braking for city driving.

Built with Precision and Preserved Heritage

The 2024 Kia Pride EV Concept was converted in the UK by Electrogenic using advanced production methods such as laser scanning, CAD modeling, and 3D printing. The vehicle’s original structure was preserved, making all modifications reversible. This approach combines modern EV technology with the timeless design of the original Pride, creating a unique blend of heritage and innovation.

Part of Kia UK’s One-Off Series

The Pride EV is the third unique vehicle created by Kia UK, following the Stinger GT420 and the Soul EV beach buggy. These special projects highlight Kia’s commitment to innovation and creativity, while also paying homage to the company’s history.

Kia’s 80-Year Journey

Founded in 1944 as a bicycle components manufacturer, Kia has evolved into a global leader in the automotive industry. The company’s electrification journey continues to shape its future, with plans to introduce 15 electric vehicles by 2027, nine of which will be available in the UK. While the Kia Pride EV remains a one-off, it stands as a symbol of Kia’s forward-thinking approach to vehicle design and electrification.
