2024 DS SM Tribute Concept

In the spring of 2020, DS Automobiles released a series of sketches under the hashtag #SM2020 on social media. These designs were part of an internal creative competition at DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS, exploring a modern reinterpretation of the majestic SM, a model first introduced in 1970.

SM TRIBUTE marks ten years since DS Automobiles first participated in the Chantilly Arts & Elegance event, while also acknowledging the innovation and elegance rooted in these vehicles.

A Tribute to SM with a Contemporary Design Study

The 2024 DS SM Tribute Concept is a result of the creative feedback from the DS Automobiles community. The DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS team envisioned how the SM would have evolved over five decades. Originally introduced in the early 1970s, the SM was renowned for its combination of advanced technology and aerodynamic styling by Robert Opron. The SM was powered by a V6 engine and equipped with the hydropneumatic suspension from the DS, offering unmatched comfort and road performance. Today, the SM remains a highly sought-after classic among collectors, praised for its blend of comfort, performance, and innovation.

Exterior Design: A Slender Yet Muscular Silhouette

The 2024 DS SM Tribute Concept presents a dynamic, streamlined silhouette that reflects efficiency. The car features an iconic front end with a long bonnet, and its extended bi-tone bodywork echoes the Gold Leaf color seen in the 1971 brochure. The design incorporates a satin varnish with a handmade patina, combined with a specially tinted black.

Head of Color, Materials, and Finishes Design at DS Automobiles, Vincent Lobry, emphasized the influence of different eras in the vehicle's design, blending the aesthetics of the 1930s, the iconic SM of the 1970s, and contemporary DS designs. The 2024 DS SM Tribute Concept retains many of the original SM’s elements, such as a front glass section that once revealed the headlamps. This feature now serves as a 3D screen, framed by a light signature with vertical DRLs resembling the triad shape of a ship’s bow. The profile maintains the airflow lines characteristic of the original SM, with the rear wheels partially enclosed by removable panels.

A Modern Take on the Iconic Proportions

While the overall length of the SM Tribute has slightly increased to 4.94 meters, the car has gained in muscularity and width, standing at 1.98 meters wide. The ground clearance has been reduced to optimize efficiency, while 22-inch wheels with aerodynamic inserts further enhance the car’s performance.

Interior Design: Continuation of the 1970s Styling Language

The interior of the 2024 DS SM Tribute Concept continues the design language of the 1970 SM, featuring the signature top dashboard shape and oval instruments. Staying true to the avant-garde nature of the SM, the car introduces projection-based information displays and a curved screen console that connects to the steer-by-wire steering wheel.

The cabin is light and airy, with a mix of leather and Alcantara® in an ivory color. The dashboard’s large display case allows for a variety of customizable finishes and materials. The seats feature horizontal cushions reminiscent of the original SM’s upholstery.

SM TRIBUTE at Chantilly Arts et Élégance

The 2024 DS SM Tribute Concept will be showcased at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance event, marking the ten-year anniversary of DS Automobiles’ participation. Positioned alongside an original SM, the tribute car will compete in the Concours d’Elegance on September 15. Throughout the event, a wide range of SM models, including the SM OPERA, SM MYLORD cabriolet, and SM racing version from the 1974 24 Hours of Spa, will be on display.
