2023 Toyota HiLux GR Sport: Powerful Off-Road Performance Pickup
The Toyota HiLux range expands with the introduction of the 2023 Toyota HiLux GR Sport, a new flagship variant that delivers enhanced off-road capability and performance credentials. Priced from $73,990, the HiLux GR Sport builds on the popularity of Australia's favorite pickup.
Powertrain and Performance
The HiLux GR Sport is powered by an upgraded 2.8L turbo-diesel engine producing 165kW and 550Nm, increases of 10% over the standard HiLux. Toyota modified the turbocharger and fuel injection system to boost power and torque. The six-speed automatic transmission is recalibrated for the extra grunt. These enhancements give the HiLux GR Sport the most powerful diesel engine in the HiLux lineup.
To match the upgraded powertrain, engineers fitted KYB monotube shock absorbers and removed the rear stabilizer bar to improve suspension articulation. This allows the HiLux GR Sport to better handle off-road terrain while retaining its 3,500kg braked towing capacity.
Exterior Styling
Visually, the HiLux GR Sport stands out with its widened track, increased ride height, and Dakar-inspired styling cues. The front bumper features “air curtains” to reduce drag, and the skid plate provides underbody protection. Rock rails replace side steps, and the rear recovery points enable snatch strap recovery. The GR Sport rolls on 17-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone all-terrain tires.
Interior Upgrades
Inside, the GR Sport receives unique bolstered front seats with suede and leather accents. The leather-wrapped steering wheel features paddle shifters and red accents. Toyota also upgraded the audio with a 9-speaker JBL system.
Safety and Technology
The HiLux GR Sport comes equipped with Toyota's latest safety tech including blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Toyota Safety Sense. Convenience features include smart key entry and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
In summary, the 2023 Toyota HiLux GR Sport brings serious off-road enhancements to Toyota's popular pickup. With added power, rugged styling, and upgraded suspension, this new flagship model delivers unmatched capability and performance.
