About the Car

2023 Peugeot 3008 Hybrid

The year 2023 will be a real electric year for PEUGEOT with the presentation of new models and new technologies in the range. These include the new hybrid system developed by Stellantis, which will initially be offered on the PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008 before being extended to other models. It complements the already extensive range of electrified engines, including plug-in hybrids, electric motors and fuel cell variants. The PEUGEOT 48V hybrid system consists of a new generation PureTech petrol engine with 100 kW (136 hp) , which is coupled to a new electrified six-speed dual-clutch transmission, including an electric motor. With a battery that charges while driving, this technology offers extra torque at low revs and reduces fuel consumption by up to 15 percent.

2023 Peugeot 3008 Hybrid

In city traffic, a C-segment SUV equipped with the hybrid system can therefore drive more than 50 percent of the time in 100 percent, emission-free electric mode.

Simple and transparent operation

The PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® informs the driver about how the hybrid system works. The different modes can be activated automatically.

In everyday driving, the combustion engine and the electric motor work together or separately to optimize energy consumption.

Under heavy acceleration, the electric motor provides the petrol engine with additional torque at low revs.

When decelerating, the petrol engine switches off and the electric motor becomes a generator to charge the 48-volt battery.

The vehicle only drives in the city for short distances and when maneuvering with the electric motor in “Zero Emission” mode.

The advantages

Up to 15 percent less fuel consumption and from 126 grams of CO 2 /km for the PEUGEOT 3008 and 128 grams of CO 2 /km for the PEUGEOT 5008  is one of the advantages of the new technology. Compared to a non-electrified petrol engine with comparable characteristics, the hybrid engine offers an average fuel saving of around 1 litre/100 km (according to the WLTP cycle combined) in a C-segment SUV.

This saving is achieved in the city (minus 2.5 l/100 km) and on the country road (minus 0.7 l/100 km), while highway consumption remains unchanged. The performance means for the PEUGEOT 3008 and the PEUGEOT 5008 an average reduction in CO 2 emissions of 20 g/km (combined according to the WLTP cycle).

If the battery charge allows, the hybrid system enables starting, maneuvering (e.g. for parking) and low-speed driving in heavy traffic in all-electric mode. In city traffic, the PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008 HYBRID 1 can be driven more than 50 percent of the time in zero-emission electric mode. At higher speeds (up to 145 km/h), the combustion engine 1

switches off if the driver does not press the accelerator pedal at a constant speed and when braking.

When accelerating, the electric motor provides additional torque with a single boost, which compensates for the response time of the turbo. This avoids downshifts and ensures more driving comfort and dynamics. When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed, the electric motor provides an additional 9 kW (approx. 12 hp) of power.

The components of the 48V hybrid syste

All the parts that make up the new engine are located under the hood. An exception is the 48-volt battery installed under the left front seat of the PEUGEOT 3008 1 and PEUGEOT 5008 1 .

The 1.2 liter PureTech petrol engine

It is a new generation of PureTech petrol engine specially designed for optimal integration with hybridization:

  • 3 cylinders and 1,199 cm³,
  • an output of 100 kW (136 hp) at 5,500 rpm,
  • torque of 230 Nm at 1,750 rpm,
  • Variable geometry turbocharger for improved engine performance,
  • timing chain (low maintenance costs),
  • Miller cycle operation for better combustion thermal efficiency,
  • meets the Euro 6e standard.

The e-DCS6 transmission (Dual Clutch System)

The engine of the PEUGEOT 48V Hybrid features a new electrified six-speed non-torque-interrupting dual-clutch transmission, specially designed for hybrid systems. The transmission housing also houses the electric motor, inverter and control unit, optimizing the vehicle’s size and weight and guaranteeing excellent driving performance.

The electric motor

The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor built into the gearbox develops a peak output of 21 kW (28 hp) and a torque of 55 Nm. It enables the vehicle to be driven 100 percent electrically with low torque requirements and supports the combustion engine in reducing its consumption. When decelerating, the engine acts as a generator to charge the hybrid system’s 48-volt battery. It also uses the belt starter generator to start the combustion engine.

The belt starter generator

The starter, fed with 48 volts, ensures that the combustion engine starts up again via the ancillary unit belt. It enables quick and transparent starts.

The 48V hybrid battery

The 48-volt lithium-ion battery has a gross capacity of 898 Wh and an available capacity of 432 Wh. It is designed to maintain the same level of performance throughout the life of the vehicle and comes with an eight-year original warranty and 160,000km delivered.

The battery is installed under the left front seat. This arrangement offers many advantages over rear seat installation and means that

  • the entire interior is available,
  • the full volume of the trunk is retained,
  • the energy losses caused by the length of the cables are optimized,
  • the driving pleasure is maintained thanks to the correct distribution of the masses (battery in the middle of the vehicle).

Two electrical networks

The PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008 have two electrical networks: a low-voltage network at 12 volts to supply the vehicle equipment and a high-voltage network at 48 volts to supply the hybrid system. The electricity is generated exclusively by the 48V electric motor. A DC-DC converter transfers the electricity generated to the vehicle’s 12-volt network.

Specific hardware

The PEUGEOT models equipped with the new hybrid engine have a special display. The digital display shows 100% electric driving (speedometer in blue), energy flow in the system, battery charge level, operating status via a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power) and percentage of distance traveled in electric mode at any given time or date end of the journey.

In addition, these models will be equipped with the AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System), which will emit a sound at speeds of up to 30 km/h to warn pedestrians and cyclists that the vehicle is approaching.

The new engine replaces the PureTech 130 EAT8* and will soon also be available for other models in the PEUGEOT range such as the PEUGEOT 208, PEUGEOT 2008, PEUGEOT 308, PEUGEOT 308 SW and the PEUGEOT 408. The PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008 HYBRID are produced at the Sochaux plant and are scheduled to go on sale in Europe from the second quarter of 2023.

At the time of this announcement, the new hybrid versions of the PEUGEOT 3008 and PEUGEOT 5008 cannot yet be ordered.
