About the Car

2023 Ferrari 499P Racecar

499P is the name of the new Le Mans Hypercar with which Ferrari will face the FIA WEC endurance world championship in the premier class starting from 2023, and it is a name that evokes the history of the Prancing Horse. In the past, the Maranello prototypes had the letter P in the initials that identified them, frequently preceded by the number of the unit displacement of the engine. The 499P is no exception. It is a car that is the result of a vision that proudly has its roots in the past, because that is where that legend was born that still perpetuates today and that has allowed us to obtain 22 world titles and 9 overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but remains strongly projected towards tomorrow, both for the technical and design contents that characterize this prototype. In the design of the livery with which the 499P will debut in the next 1000 Miglia di Sebring, the famous chromatic scheme already introduced in the 312 P of the seventies has been taken up, which also visually underlines the connection with a history interrupted 50 years ago, but always present in the essence of the brand. For this reason, number 50 will be one of the two with which the cars of Maranello will be entered in the world championship, while the other will be number 51, one of the most successful ever. The official crews that will take the 499P into the race will instead be the subject of future communications. number 50 will be one of the two with which Maranello’s cars will be entered in the world championship, while the other will be number 51, one of the most successful ever. The official crews that will take the 499P into the race will instead be the subject of future communications. number 50 will be one of the two with which Maranello’s cars will be entered in the world championship, while the other will be number 51, one of the most successful ever. The official crews that will take the 499P into the race will instead be the subject of future communications.

Le Mans Hypercar: in our DNA, to win

The definition of the new technical regulation relating to the Hypercar class issued by FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) and ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) led to the choice of Ferrari to produce a Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) to take a path of innovations and development, faithful to the tradition that sees the track as the ideal ground for experimenting with cutting-edge technological solutions to be adopted on the road cars produced in Maranello. The 499P is a manifesto of Ferrari’s commitment in the world of endurance races, of the desire to face increasingly difficult challenges, of the determination to win, even if with the necessary humility of those who are well aware of confronting top-level opponents who they have similar ambitions.

The prototype complies with the technical dictates of the Le Mans Hypercar class regulations, which envisage the use in the FIA World Endurance Championship of cars with hybrid engines, equipped with all-wheel drive and with a minimum weight of no less than 1,030 kilograms. All the corporate realities were involved in the definition of the 499P, drawing on the universe of technical, professional and human excellence that characterize the Maranello company, entrusting its management to Sport Activities GT, directed by Antonello Coletta, and the technical management to Ferdinando Cannizzo. , head of the GT and Sport racing car development body.

New hybrid power

The 499P’s hybrid powertrain combines a mid-rear heat engine with an electric motor on the front axle. The ICE unit – Internal Combustion Engine – has a maximum power on the ground, limited by the regulation, of 500 kW (680 horsepower) and is derived from the V6 biturbo road family. The internal combustion engine, which shares the architecture of the engine mounted on the 296 GT3, compared to the latter has undergone a profound review by the Maranello technicians, aimed both at developing ad hoc solutions for the prototype and at the overall lightening; among the specific characteristics of the “V” six-cylinder of the 499P, moreover, the fact that the drive unit is of the load-bearing type and therefore performs a valuable structural function, compared to the versions that equip the racing touring cars, where the engine is mounted on the chassis of the car. The second “soul” of the hybrid powerplant is represented by the ERS – Energy Recovery System – with a maximum power of 200 kW (272 Hp), an electric motor equipped with a differential whose battery is recharged during deceleration and braking, and not requires external power sources. The battery pack, with a nominal voltage of 900 Volts, benefits from the experience gained in Formula 1 although it was developed specifically for this project.

The powertrain is mated to a seven-speed sequential gearbox. The powertrain is mated to a seven-speed sequential gearbox. benefits from the experience gained in Formula 1 although it was developed specifically for this project. The powertrain is mated to a seven-speed sequential gearbox. benefits from the experience gained in Formula 1 although it was developed specifically for this project. The powertrain is mated to a seven-speed sequential gearbox.

Designed by the wind

The new Ferrari 499P, whose lines were finalized with the involvement of the Ferrari Style Center, under the direction of Flavio Manzoni, enhances the car’s technical and aerodynamics, through simple and sinuous shapes, an explicit expression of the Ferrari DNA. The balance between tense lines and fluid surfaces, expressed with a futuristic, pure and iconic language, defines a clear and essential architecture. The bodywork of the prototype is shaped starting from a flat surface, from which the side “bellies” and wheel arches develop harmoniously. The cavities of the “bellies” are crossed by aerodynamic flows that hit the cockpit and cool the radiators under the skin. On the Ferrari 499P, the wheel arches, a hallmark of the Ferrari tradition, are characterized in this case by large openings on the surface, with the aim of reducing the pressure inside the tenants. Together with the optical groups, they give character and expressiveness to the front, without hiding the references to the new stylistic canons introduced with the Ferrari Daytona SP3.

The rear is the maximum expression of the combination of technique, aerodynamics and design. A thin carbon skin covers the various functions, leaving the wheels and suspension completely exposed. The “tail” is characterized by a double horizontal wing; wing and upper flaps are carefully designed to ensure the aerodynamic load necessary to achieve maximum performance.

The lower wing also houses a ‘light bar’ that characterizes the rear design with a decisive and minimalist gesture. In a dominant position, on the roof of the car, there is finally a multiple air intake for supplying the intake of the V6 engine and for cooling the battery and gearbox.

Innovative technologies

Made from a carbon fiber monocoque frame, under the “dress” the Ferrari 499P is characterized by solutions that represent the avant-garde in the field of technologies applied to motorsport. The geometry of the suspensions, with overlapping triangles of the “push-rod” type, allows for the achievement of stiffness qualities that translate into outstanding performance, which are evident both at the highest absolute speeds and in the travel of curves. The electronic sector borrows and further advances the experience gained in competitions with GT cars.

No less sophisticated is the braking system, which integrates a brake-by-wire system necessary to allow the recovery of the kinetic energy during braking by the electric front axle and developed to combine precision and speed of response with reliability and durability. complementary aspects whose synthesis is one of the keys to success of endurance races. The electric front axle uses the energy recovered during braking and stored in the high-voltage battery to transmit torque even to the front wheels above a certain speed, helping to increase the car’s performance on the tracks that will host the 2023 calendar.
