In keeping with the philosophy that progress never ceases, ABT Sportsline, renowned for its expertise in enhancing VW Group vehicles, has introduced an innovative technology for the recently unveiled RS 6 and RS 7 Legacy Edition models. This advancement takes the already impressive 4.0-liter bi-turbo DJPB engines, which produce 603 kW (820 hp, V-max 330 km/h)*, and elevates their power to a staggering 736 kW (1000 hp)** with approximately 1150 Nm of torque.

The groundbreaking system behind this enhancement is known as IWI, which stands for Indirect Water/Ethanol-Injection. IWI is strategically placed in front of the engine's two throttle valves. This supplementary injection system is meticulously controlled by a newly developed electronic control unit, specifically crafted by ABT Sportsline for this purpose. It seamlessly integrates with the AEC system, harnessing the advantages of ethanol, such as its widespread availability and favorable physical properties. According to Thomas Biermaier, Managing Director of ABT Sportsline, "The IWI technology empowers us to maintain exceptional power output in these high-performance regions. Through IWI injection, we achieve remarkable internal engine cooling, enabling the engine to receive more charge air or oxygen for enhanced fuel combustion, resulting in sustained peak performance."

Activating the IWI system is a breeze with the RS button conveniently located on the steering wheel of the RS 6 LE and RS 7 LE models. A simple press and hold of the RS button for one second during a drive cycle in one of the two RS modes unleashes the additional power when it's needed most. With the IWI system engaged, every prod of the accelerator pedal demands the maximum performance from the vehicle.

To achieve the 1000 hp conversion, ABT Sportsline incorporates several additional components. These include a carbon intake system equipped with enlarged turbo air intakes and optimized turbochargers. The two vehicles also benefit from special intercoolers with enlarged air intakes integrated into the front apron. The package further encompasses forged pistons with compression reduction, reinforced connecting rods and piston pins, a sports catalytic converter with a petrol particle filter, an exhaust system, and supplementary oil coolers.

An essential part of the equation is the water/ethanol tank used for Indirect Water/Ethanol Injection (IWI). This tank, with a usable volume of 15 liters, is discreetly situated in the trunk recess. The filler neck for the ABT IWI liquid is conveniently located beneath the standard fuel filler flap. A single tank filling is typically sufficient for up to 3000 kilometers, equating to a consumption rate of 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers**. Keeping track of the fluid level is hassle-free, thanks to a level sensor that displays the information in the myABT app or through Apple CarPlay on the MMI. Reordering the necessary ABT IWI fluid is a straightforward process via the myABT app. Alongside various performance data for the vehicles, the app provides real-time updates on the system status and the filling level of the IWI tank.
