The Golf R Estate has returned to the Volkswagen UK line-up, as another Volkswagen R model that can be considered a true all-rounder, with significant practicality, everyday usability, power and pace, and a sharp focus on dynamic appeal.

The Golf R Estate is 4,644 mm in length and boasts a wheelbase of 2,678 mm (respectively 349 mm and 66 mm increases compared with its predecessor, and 354 mm and 50 mm greater than the Golf R hatchback). It is 1,789 mm wide and 1,466 mm high (including roof rails). In comparison, the current Golf R hatchback is 4,290 mm long and boasts a wheelbase of 2,628 mm. The height and width of both Golf versions are identical.

These bolstered dimensions over both its predecessor and its hatchback sibling contribute to increased practicality – 611 litres of boot volume (1,642 with the rear seats folded flat), versus the hatchback’s 374 litres and the previous Golf R Estate’s 605 litres – and also provide considerably more space for rear passengers, with maximum rear legroom expanding from 903 mm to 941 mm.

The R continues as the Golf Estate’s outright flagship in terms of performance and positioning, now with 320 PS and 420 Nm on tap from its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, enabling a top speed of 155 mph where permitted. The 0 to 62 mph sprint is dispatched in just 4.9 seconds – making it jointly the fastest-accelerating Volkswagen estate on sale, alongside the Arteon R Shooting Brake.

The powerful and advanced EA888 evo4 petrol engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission and, like all vehicles from Volkswagen R, 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The system has been comprehensively uprated for the latest generation of R models, and was first installed on the Golf R, with the introduction of R-Performance Torque Vectoring that distributes the engine output to all four wheels. The new differential on the rear axle distributes the drive power not just between the front and rear axles, but also variably between the two rear wheels. Up to 100% of torque can be directed to the wheel on the outside of a bend if necessary. This, working in conjunction with the all-new Vehicle Dynamics Manager and XDS electromechanical differential locks, allows a higher level of agility and a reduction in understeer, which in turn contributes to even greater driver involvement and dynamic appeal.

The Golf R Estate is priced from £43,175 RRP OTR, and sits atop the Golf Estate range. It is identifiable by its attractive 18-inch ‘Jerez’ alloy wheels, full R body kit, roof spoiler and quad exhaust pipes – a feature that subtly hints at the model’s potency compared with other Golf Estates. Elsewhere in the Golf Estate range, the SUV-like Alltrack is the only other Golf model to feature 4MOTION all-wheel drive, and is powered by a 2.0-litre, 200 PS diesel engine.

Like the Golf R, the interior of the Golf R Estate features a bespoke, heated R steering wheel, with a new R button which allows the driver direct access to the car’s newly enhanced range of drive modes without needing to take their hands away from the wheel. Extended paddle shifters also add to the driver-focused convenience of the model’s cockpit. Sports seats with integrated head restraints feature a ‘Sardegna’ design in black-blue cloth, unique to the new R models, while the outer areas are in ArtVelours. The model’s brake callipers are finished in the hallmark shade of Volkswagen R blue, and feature the R division’s logo, while the car’s door mirrors are finished in a matt chrome effect.
