The Highlander, which made its debut in Western Europe in 2021, provides refinement with a flexible seven-seat interior and intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) performance. New for 2023 is a rich Cypress Green metallic paint option that heightens the Highlander’s distinctive styling and makes it stand out on the road. There is a contrasting dash of style from new 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels, while the addition of Beige and Ochre leather seat upholstery choices raises the premium look and feel of the interior.
The Highlander is the latest model to adopt the new Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system. This introduces a 12.3-inch touch screen high-definition display and added functionality including cloud-based navigation with real-time information on road events and an on-board voice agent. The cloud navigation can be accessed without having to pair a smartphone and with no additional data costs; the new Highlander is sold with an inclusive four-year data plan that also covers convenient, over-the-air system updates. High grade models are equipped with Toyota Smart Connect+ which additionally provides an embedded navigation system which allows routes to be planned when and where connection to the cloud is not available. This also provides 3D city mapping, road sign recognition and fixed speed camera location information.
The new systems enable useful remote functions, including locking and unlocking of the doors and operation of the hazard lights to help locate the car in a busy car park. They allow wireless smartphone connection via Apple CarPlay, plus wired connection to use the Android Auto system. All Highlander models now come with a wireless charging tray, relocated in the front console for easier use.
The driver’s instrument display has undergone a full redesign with the introduction of a new 12.3-inch digital combimeter that provides easy-to-read information and intuitive operation. The display creates the effect of a three-dimensional concave meter cluster, with the graphics customisable to suit the driver’s preference from four design themes: Casual, Smart, Tough and Sport.
In Western Europe, the 2023 Highlander retains its 248 DIN hp hybrid electric powertrain which, with CO2 emissions of 149 g/km (WLTP combined cycle) has the best weight to emissions ratio in its segment**. For Eastern European markets there is a new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine***, replacing the previous 3.5-litre V6 unit bringing benefit in fuel-consumption and reduction of CO2 emissions. The new power plant produces a maximum 269 DIN hp and is tuned for high acceleration response and torque delivery that makes for more relaxed driving with less need to make downshifts to gain powerful performance. The new Highlander is available for order now with first deliveries to commence in Q4 2022.
