2022 Suzuki Vitara Hybrid 140V

Suzuki presents the new VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V , the latest evolution of the model that inaugurated the compact SUV category in Italy in 1988. This version brings the 1.5 140V hybrid engine to its debut, alongside the popular 1.4 48V variant. The new propulsion system blends the adventurous spirit of the original VITARA with the needs of today’s motorists, who are increasingly attentive to efficiency and respect for the environment, as well as comfort and performance.

With this new model, the electrification process of the Suzuki range, which began in 2016 with the Baleno Hybrid, has come to completion and enters a new phase.
The Suzuki hybrid 140 Volt technology that debuts with VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V will play an increasingly important role in the near future and will also be offered on other models, allowing to comply with the increasingly stringent European regulations on emissions. VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V is only available with AGS automatic transmission, both with front-wheel drive and 4×4 AllGrip all-wheel drive and is offered in the only exclusive Starview trim.

New Hybrid 140V technology

The heart of the VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V is a brand new hybrid propulsion system, completely designed by Suzuki.
To compose it are:

  • 5 DualJet K15C engine ,
  • the AGS robotised gearbox
  • the hybrid module with 24.6 kW MGU motogenerator , powered by a 140V traction battery.

All of these components have been designed and developed by Suzuki to combine a high level of electrification with low weight and dimensions. The architecture chosen by the Hamamatsu technicians allows the various elements to interact in an optimal way and to make the most of the potential of the renowned 4WD AllGrip drive system. An advanced technical package that ensures excellent performance, optimal energy efficiency combined with unique driving pleasure.

1.5 DualJet K15C engine

The thermal unit is a new four-cylinder naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle with a displacement of 1,462 cm3. and a 13: 1 compression ratio. The total power of the petrol engine is 75kW (102hp), while the total system power – in combination with the electric motor generator – reaches 84 kW (115hp).

AGS robotised gearbox

The new AGS (Automatic Gear Shift) robotised gearbox with sequential function is positioned between the clutch and the electric motor generator, with which it works in perfect harmony. The electric unit takes care of making the changes from one gear to another, whether automatic or manual, fluid by modulating the clutch independently. The progression is linear with responses ready even in the brilliant guide. Therefore, low weight and simplicity of construction make this the perfect solution that adapts the choice of gears to the needs of the driver and his driving style.

Hybrid module

The new hybrid module consists of two main elements: a 140V battery and a 24.6 kW motor generator.
The battery has a total capacity of 840Wh and is housed together with all its subsystems in the double bottom of the trunk, thus maintaining its volume unchanged.
It is a latest generation lithium-titanate battery that guarantees four significant advantages over a common lithium battery:

  • maximum efficiency in a wider range of temperatures,
  • greater efficiency in terms of energy supplied and charged,
  • greater longevity
  • greater reliability.

The motor generator (MGU – Motor Generator Unit), connected via the reduction gear to a shaft parallel to the gearbox primary shaft, guarantees traction to the car both independently and in combination with the thermal engine, delivering up to 24.6 kW with a torque equal to 152.7Nm. During braking or slowing down, it has a double function both as a generator and as a 140V battery recharge.

The panel is completed with the ISG (Intergrated Starter Generator), which performs the functions of starter motor and alternator, also supplying the on-board systems during stops and when driving in electric mode.

Operation

When starting and maneuvering at low speed, i.e. when the thermal engine would be less efficient and would consume more, the hybrid system moves the new VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V with only electric drive. With a fully charged battery, you can reach 80 km / h in electric mode or cover a distance of up to 4.5 km.

When a sufficient speed is reached, the electric motor leaves room for the thermal one, re-entering “play” to keep the speed in the motor load phase constant.

The combustion engine and the electric one can act simultaneously. This happens during gear changes, as already mentioned, and when the driver accelerates decisively. In this case, the two engines push in unison to ensure maximum performance. The generous torque provided by both makes for lively cues and engaging driving.

During the most intense decelerations, the motorgenerator provides regenerative braking and charges the 140V battery, an operation that sometimes carries out, if necessary, even at constant speed, using some of the power from the thermal engine.

Eco mode

VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V is equipped with an ECO Mode driving mode that optimizes fuel consumption and maximizes efficiency. This feature favors electric drive and makes accelerator responses more gradual. It also adjusts the air conditioning so that it absorbs less energy and sets any four-wheel drive to Auto, the setting that involves less load for the heat engine.

All-wheel drive, total versatility

VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V has a strong urban vocation but its character remains the indomitable one of its ancestors. To move more easily off the asphalt, this version can be equipped with 4WD AllGrip Select four-wheel drive, which makes use of the more than fifty years of experience gained by Suzuki in the field of 4x4s. By acting on a practical control on the central tunnel, the rider can select four different modes: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock. Each of them distributes the torque between the two axles according to different logics to offer ideal traction in every situation and to guarantee maximum fun and safety, with always low fuel consumption and emissions.

All standard, with no surprises.

In the renewed VITARA price list, the Cool and Top trim levels are reserved for the Hybrid 1.4 48V versions, while the new VITARA HYBRID 1.5 140V is offered in the only rich Starview trim, which takes its name from the standard glass sunroof. For the latter the standard equipment is complete with everything, the only optional is the metallic paint.
