2022 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet Panamericana
Porsche and La Carrera Panamericana are so closely related that the Stuttgart brand owes the names 911 Carrera and Panamera to the legendary Mexican rally. To honour the first Porsche that crossed the finish line in this competition, a Porsche 356 S Cabriolet marked with the number 11 and driven by the German-Austrian prince Paulo Alfonso de Metternich and the Brazilian baron Manuel Antônio de Teffé, Porsche Latin America and Porsche de Mexico commissioned Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur to customize a unique car in the world; the 911 Carrera Panamericana Special, which was announced today, two days before the start of the 35th edition of the ‘Modern Era’ of the famous competition. “A good part of Porsche’s success story in motorsports began to be forged in La Carrera Panamericana, which for many experts was the most demanding road race in the world in the 1950s,” said Camilo San Martin, director of Porsche de México. “We find it ideal to remember the great deeds of the brand in ‘La Pana’ with a unique car, the 911 Carrera Panamericana Special, a car full of details that reminds us of the 356 Super Cabriolet that in 1952 not only made history for being the first Porsche to run and finish the race, but also took first place among all cars with engines up to 1500 cubic centimetres.”
Based on a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet
The Porsche 911 Carrera Panamericana Special is based on a 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet rear-wheel drive model 992. The two most striking details of its exterior are the roof canvas in Graffiti Grey and the engine grille in white.
“Graffiti Gray is not available for the 911 model’s roof, so we had to use the 718 Spyder model 982 canvas, making this Sonderwunsch the only 911 in the world with that colour hood,” said Grant Larson, Porsche’s director of Special Projects. “As for the engine grille, we tried to reinterpret the design used on the 1952 356 S Cabriolet and intended to highlight the number 11 on that part of the car. We achieved this by making this 911 the only one in the world with the white grille and by darkening out the central rear brake lights to give the impression of an 11, a number we also painted in black on the side doors framed in a white circle, just as they were on the original car, with a special font that is also not on any other 911.”
A very striking detail of the exterior of this collector car is its 20 inches Turbo design wheels in front, and 21 in the rear, whose inner drums and spokes were hand-painted in metallic Gentian Blue, while the central hubs are in grey. This combination not only matches the body colour but is reminiscent of the wheels of the 1952 356 S Cabriolet. The brake callipers are enamelled black rather than the traditional red.
Another reference to the original car is found on the upper part of the windshield, where a black decal with the name PORSCHE, in White, was placed, reminiscent of the one used by Prince Metternich and Baron Teffé on the trunk lid of their car. On the upper part of the doors there are also decals with the Carrera Panamericana shield, reminiscent of those of the National Automobile Association (ANA) that the 356 S Cabriolet wore.
Clean interior in shades of grey
In the interior of the 911 Carrera Panamericana Special we can see its adaptable sport seats (18 positions) in Crayon Grey leather, with piping and the historic Carrera Panamericana helmet embroidered on the headrests in Graphite Blue. The door panels are also trimmed in Crayon Gray. The Slate Gray colour is also present on the floor mats, dashboard, and steering wheel, which has a Crayon Gray stripe at the top, a detail reminiscent of racing cars. An additional element that provides an elegant and classic look is the Crayon Gray cross-stitching, which is visible on the seats and dashboard.
On the right side of the dashboard is the inscription ‘911 Carrera S La Carrera Panamericana 1952’, while the centre armrest features the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur logo stamped in Graphite Blue.
Other distinctive elements of this Porsche 911 Carrera Panamericana Special are the tachometer and central clock with white exterior rings, the LED light projectors in the doors with the iconic Carrera Panamericana license plate design (the same as on the 356 S Cabriolet at the rear), and the door sills illuminated with the individualized inscription ‘911 Carrera S La Carrera Panamericana 1952’.
