The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer rises to the challenges of everyday urban driving, experience-oriented leisure activities, family life and longer trips away in equal measure. Innovations in the areas of design and technology lend the car an undeniably forward-looking aura. The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is fitted as standard with BMW Operating System 8 and the new generation of the BMW iDrive control system with BMW Curved Display. This combination only currently features in the fully electric BMW iX and BMW i4 and is therefore making its debut in a compact-class model from the BMW brand. The range of driver assistance systems specified as standard or available as options also sets a new benchmark both for the BMW model line-up and across the market as a whole.
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer additionally plays a trailblazing role in the field of drive system technology. Its vehicle architecture is designed to accommodate both pure combustion engines and electrified drive systems. New engines, the second generation of 48V mild hybrid technology from BMW, the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission fitted as standard in all model variants, and extensively updated chassis technology take both efficiency and agility to considerably greater heights. Customers can choose from three petrol engines and one diesel unit from launch in February 2022. And the range will be expanded a few months later with the addition of two plug-in hybrid models. The latter will now be equipped with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which brings optimised dynamics and a significantly extended electric range.
The vehicle concept underpinning the predecessor model – launched in 2014 – combined spatial functionality with the signature driving qualities of BMW to win over additional target groups to BMW’s world of premium mobility. With conquest rates as high as 80 per cent, it succeeded in convincing an extraordinarily high number of customers to buy a BMW for the first time. In all, more than 430,000 units of the first-generation BMW 2-Series Active Tourer were sold. And the new edition has been tailored clearly to the preferences and needs of European customers. Germany remains the most important individual market.
Like its predecessor, the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will be produced at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Opened as recently as 2005, this state-of-the-art facility also builds models including the BMW 1-Series, BMW 2-Series Gran Coupé and BMW i3. The factory can claim standout expertise in front-wheel-drive architecture and electric mobility, and the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer can also be fully integrated into the production system of the existing assembly line.
Modern crossover character with a strikingly sporty edge
Powerful proportions and dynamic lines, a raised seating position and a spacious, variable-usage interior ensure the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer fits the modern crossover mould. It then adds a sense of sporting presence to the mix but shuns the ruggedness-hinting design cues of a Sports Activity Vehicle. The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer combines its spaciousness and precisely thought-out – and therefore uncomplicated – functionality with a stylish visual presence and a level of driving pleasure unmatched in its segment.
The exterior dimensions of the incoming BMW 2-Series Active Tourer are larger than those of its predecessor – by 32 millimetres in length (now 4,386 millimetres), 24 millimetres in width (1,824 millimetres) and 21 millimetres in height (1,576 millimetres), giving the new model an appearance that visually embodies both its generous spaciousness and sporting tendencies. While the 2-Series Active Tourer’s wheelbase is unchanged from the outgoing model, at 2,670 millimetres, its track widths have been increased by 25 millimetres at the front axle (to 1,586 millimetres) and 26 millimetres at the rear axle (1,588 millimetres) – which has a positive effect on handling poise and agility.
Optimised aerodynamic properties and acoustic comfort
The body concept behind the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also includes targeted optimisation of its aerodynamic properties, with benefits for both driving dynamics and efficiency. The flow of air around the car is guided judiciously by the following measures: an active air flap control system for the BMW kidney grille and the lower intake in the front apron (adjustable, as required, through ten stages); air curtains in the outer sections of the front apron; flush-fitting door handles; a combination of roof spoiler and side air deflectors around the rear window; a large-surface diffuser in the lower section of the rear apron; aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels; and a virtually fully sealed underbody with precisely defined air guides and exhaust tailpipes integrated out of sight. These features combine with the car’s dynamic proportions to improve its drag coefficient; depending on the model variant, the Cd of the 2-Series Active Tourer is now as low as 0.26.
Also reduced is the wind noise created by the body and add-on parts. An optimised sealing concept for the body around the doors and tailgate, plus improved airflow management courtesy of newly designed exterior mirrors, increase acoustic comfort over the predecessor model. The use of acoustically optimised tyres reduces noise from this source. Added to which, an improved engine and transmission mounting improves isolation from vibrations, which likewise enhances driving comfort. Starting the engine and turning it off also generate significantly lower vibrations in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer.
Intelligent lightweight design optimises rigidity and weight
The weight-optimised construction of the body and the chassis components helps to give the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer its agility and efficiency. An intelligent mix of materials succeeds in minimising vehicle weight while also enhancing the body’s rigidity and crash safety. The hot-stamped steels and aluminium alloys used for the safety passenger cell are supplemented by multi-phase steels for extra reinforcement.
Making the bonnet from aluminium reduces weight at the front of the car and therefore helps increase agility, while lightweight plastic supports for the front and rear doors bring further weight savings. Lightweight forged wheels (not fitted on all model variants) help reduce unsprung mass. And the use of steel components with a zinc/magnesium coating optimises corrosion protection.
A comprehensive passive safety concept maximises occupant protection in an extremely wide range of collisions and factors in the requirements of crash testing procedures in the markets where the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will be offered. Besides the extremely rigid passenger cell and highly resilient load-bearing structures, it also includes integrated safety electronics which deploy the restraint systems in the right sequence, at the optimum moment and with the required effect for the specific collision type and severity. An interaction airbag is deployed between the driver and front passenger in the event of a side-on impact, boosting occupant protection. And the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also comes as standard with an active bonnet to improve pedestrian protection. Pyrotechnic actuators raise the bonnet if the vehicle collides with a pedestrian, creating more deformation space between the bonnet and the hard underlying structures.
Sustainability throughout the value cycle
The selection of materials was carefully thought out and clearly defined in the early phase of the series development process. This optimises sustainability in the production of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer and ensures a high degree of recyclability at the end of its lifecycle. The BMW Group’s high sustainability standards also comprise a commitment to reducing the quantities of CO2 emitted during production and apply throughout the value cycle, including the supply chain.
Only electricity generated from renewable sources is used in the production of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. A substantial proportion of this power is generated by the four wind turbines installed on the plant site. In line with an agreement between the BMW Group and the relevant suppliers, the battery cells for the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer are also manufactured using exclusively green energy.
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology used in the plug-in hybrid models also sets new standards in terms of efficiency and conserving resources. The design principle for the electric motors enables the use of rare-earth metals to be avoided, meaning that the BMW Group is not dependent on the availability of these critical raw materials. During development of the current generation of battery cells, the proportion of cobalt contained in the cathode material was reduced to less than ten per cent. In addition, the BMW Group purchases the cobalt and lithium required for the high-voltage batteries itself and then supplies it to the firms who make the battery cells. The company can therefore ensure that environmental and sustainability standards are observed during the extraction and processing of cobalt and lithium and that there are no violations of human rights.
The ongoing increase in the proportion of secondary aluminium used is also helping to make manufacturing more sustainable. Plus, high-quality recycled plastics are also used for numerous components in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. Together, these sustainability measures help to ensure that the carbon footprint of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer through the course of its lifecycle is significantly smaller than that of the predecessor model.
Versatile and uncomplicated functionality is the major strength of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer, while the sporting instincts for which BMW is renowned give it a character unique in this vehicle segment. The exterior design of the second-generation model provides an authentic showcase for the fusion of these two elements. A long wheelbase, short overhangs, a larger wheel diameter than its predecessor model and a visually imposing crossover design give the new edition of the allrounder even more eye-catching proportions than before. The interior of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer represents a fundamental updating of the original car. The new geometry of the interior underscores the spacious and open feeling available to be enjoyed in its five seats. The large BMW Curved Display re-interprets the hallmark BMW driver focus in the forward-looking style of the BMW iX. And it adds an extra flourish to a modern, premium ambience headlined by high-quality materials and precision workmanship.
Increased presence thanks to a modern front end with a large BMW kidney grille
The fresh, contemporary character of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is also revealed in the design of the front end. The clear structure of the surfaces creates an extremely high-quality impression. At the centre of the front end is the striking BMW kidney grille which, with its larger dimensions and the octagonal contours of its two constituent elements, conveys much greater presence than the predecessor model’s. A radar sensor for the optional driver assistance systems is integrated discreetly into the central section of the kidney grille surround. The positioning of the grille just below the headlights also produces a line that points down towards the road and radiates dynamism.
Providing a visual counterpoint here is the air intake integrated into the lower section of the front apron and split by a horizontal bar. The large surfaces along the sides of the front apron embody modern elegance. Here, the onrushing air is guided through the vertical air curtains – with their classy surrounds – at the far outer edges of the front end.
LED headlights with a new kind of light graphic
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer comes as standard with headlights whose low beam and high beam both use LED technology. With their slim contours and striking chrome surround, they help to give the front end a fresh and sporty look. The dark background of the lights clearly showcases the advanced technology at work. A fresh interpretation of the distinctive light graphic divides the headlights into three light clusters for low beam, high beam and daytime driving light. Positioned to the outer edges, the daytime driving light units also perform the role of turn signal indicators.
The Adaptive LED Headlights available as an option also include the cornering light function, non-dazzling matrix high beam, urban lights, a motorway beam pattern and bad weather light. At speeds above 70 km/h (43 mph), high beam automatically adjusts to the road situation at hand. To this end, the relevant LED unit is split into four segments which can be activated and deactivated independently of one another. This matrix function allows dazzling of other road users to be avoided. The urban light distribution function optimises illumination of the road edges, and the motorway beam pattern increases the range of the lights. The bad weather light adapts the low-beam light distribution specially to deal with adverse visibility, taking on the task previously carried out by the front fog lights. This also paves the way for generously proportioned surfacing around the front apron. Extremely narrow lenses for the low and high beam lights create an eye-catching interpretation of the familiar BMW twin-headlight graphic. Another typical BMW feature are the Lshaped borders that form the daytime driving lights.
Dynamic silhouette, powerful rear end with broad shoulders
When viewed from the side, both the spaciousness and sportiness of the new BMW 2 Active Tourer are immediately clear. Two precisely drawn character lines underscoring the dynamic aura of the car’s silhouette bring structure to the clearly designed surfaces. Their upward tick, the slightly forward-leaning BMW kidney grille, the much more heavily raked A-pillars than on the predecessor model, the stretched side window graphic and the slim C-pillars also play their part in giving the car its athletic looks. Flush-fitting door handles round off the smooth surface treatment. The newly designed A-pillars and door sill mirrors enable much improved all-round visibility compared to the predecessor model.
The rear end of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer cuts an extremely powerful figure with its broad shoulders and slim light units. All the light functions work with LED technology. The rear lights are positioned as standard in the centre of a pared-back light graphic and – if the optional Adaptive LED Headlights are specified – in a striking L shape. The exhaust tailpipes are integrated into the rear apron out of sight on all model variants of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. As a result, the high-quality, aerodynamically optimised L-shaped borders for the reflectors at the outer edges of the rear end are clearly visible.
Luxury Line and M Sport package with bespoke design features
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will also be offered in Luxury Line form and with an M Sport package as alternatives to standard specification. Luxury Line cars make a statement of high-end elegance with their kidney grille bars and side window surrounds in Aluminium satinated, and trim strips and decorative trim in Pearl-effect Chrome for the front and rear aprons.
The design features brought by the M Sport package include a distinctive structuring of the front apron with a trio of air intakes, and black decorative elements in the rear apron. The sporty appearance is accentuated by a prominent recess housing the brand logo above the BMW kidney grille. On cars with the M Sport package, the surrounds for the side windows, air curtains and reflectors come in Aluminium satinated, with a High-gloss Black finish available as an option. And a black diffuser element is integrated into the centre of the rear apron.
Large selection of exterior colour shades and light-alloy wheels
Two non-metallic and nine metallic paint finishes are available for the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. The selection also includes the new exterior shade Sparkling Copper Grey metallic.
16-inch or 17-inch (BMW 223i Active Tourer) light-alloy wheels are fitted as standard. Luxury Line versions of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer and cars with the M Sport package are fitted with special 17-inch light-alloy wheels. Additional attractive 17- and 18-inch wheel variants and 19-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in multispoke design can be ordered as options.
Progressive premium ambience for the interior
The size and versatility of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer’s interior are emphasised even more vividly by the fundamental redesign introduced by the second-generation car. The geometry of the interior and a host of details take their cues from the progressive interior concept espoused by the BMW iX technology flagship. Among the key features of this reinterpretation are the slim instrument panel, which serves as a stage for the BMW Curved Display, a “floating” armrest with integrated control panel and an across-the-board reduction in the number of physical control elements.
The BMW Curved Display – with its frameless glass surface angled slightly towards the driver – brings a high-class, modern highlight to the cabin. It is framed by large trim elements which extend out to the doors as a border for the cockpit area. Below it, the slim instrument panel accentuates the width of the interior with its generously sized and horizontal decorative surfacing. Five interior trim strip variants, including the new Aluminium Hexacube and open-pore fine eucalyptus wood, allow owners to individualise the design. Slim air vents ensure an extremely even distribution of fresh air around the interior. The side air vents are integrated into the A-pillars. Door trim elements with a puristic design and sculptural sills and the intricate door openers bring a highquality, modern flavour to both the front and rear of the interior.
The space underneath the armrest is used as a storage compartment, while the area in front of it houses generously sized cup holders. The newly designed control panel contains the gear selector lever (which also has a new, reduced design), the Start/Stop button, the volume control for the audio system, and buttons to activate the parking brake, My Modes, Park Assist and vehicle settings. The front area of the centre console provides a slot for a smartphone. The phone remains visible to the driver and front passenger here and can be wirelessly charged as an option.
Visually and ergonomically optimised seats are fitted as standard in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. These have been totally newly developed – as have the optional sport seats, which stand out with their prominent bolsters and shoulder sections. Available as alternatives to the standard anthracite-coloured cloth upholstery are the Sensatec perforated variant and Vernasca leather with attractive quilting, both of which can be ordered in three colours. The M Sport package brings Sensatec/Alcantara sport seats in black with blue contrast stitching or – as an option – Vernasca leather with special diamond quilting.
Interior and equipment
The forward-looking premium character set of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is also emphasised by a standard specification extending far beyond that of the predecessor model and by high-quality options, some of which have previously only been available further up the model ladder. Among the items now fitted as standard are a navigation system, two-zone automatic climate control, automatic tailgate operation, a wealth of advanced driver assistance systems, Park Assist with Reversing Assist Camera, the latest generation of the control/operation system iDrive including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, and numerous other innovative digital services which enhance both comfort and the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned. In addition to the Luxury Line and M Sport package specification options, the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer can also be ordered with a number of newly composed equipment packages enabling specific individualisation.
Newly developed seats, variable arrangement of space
The impression of generous on-board space in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is confirmed by increased headroom, shoulder room and elbow room measurements in both rows of seats compared to the predecessor model. The newly developed seats provide improved longdistance comfort. Meanwhile, the optional sport seats offer excellent lateral support over the entire seat height through quickly taken corners, thanks to their prominent bolsters and shoulder areas. Other contributors to the car’s sporting character include seat depth adjustment and the likewise adjustable seat angle. Seat heating can be specified as an option, as can electric adjustment for the fore-and-aft position, height, and cushion/backrest angle (including memory function) for both the standard seats and sport seats. The two seat variants are also available with lumbar support in the backrest including massage function.
Passengers in the three rear seats will also enjoy a noticeable increase in seating comfort and extra kneeroom over that offered by the predecessor model. ISOFIX child safety seat fasteners are integrated into the outer seats, and the 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrests can be folded down to expand the boot capacity. The second row of seats in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also offers further range for increasing comfort levels or maximising storage capacity in the rear. The angle of the seat backrest elements can be adjusted separately and through several stages – from a particularly comfortable setting to a cargo position. This allows boot capacity to grow by up to 90 litres. The optional forward/back adjustment of the rear seat bench creates even greater scope for utilising the interior in different ways. The individual sections of the 60 : 40 rear seat bench can slide forward by up to 13 centimetres either individually or together.
The wide variety of adjustment offered by the rear seats allows load capacity to be expanded from 470 litres to a maximum 1,455 litres (BMW 218i Active Tourer, BMW 218d Active Tourer) or from 415 litres to a maximum 1,405 litres (BMW 220i Active Tourer, BMW 223i Active Tourer). The boot of the plug-in hybrid model holds 406 – 1,370 litres of cargo. Automatic tailgate operation comes as standard, while the optional Comfort Access adds hands-free opening and closing. A trailer tow hitch can be ordered as an option, and this is operated electrically at the touch of a button in the new-generation BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. Depending on the model variant, the maximum permitted trailer load is as much as 1,500 kilograms (plug-in hybrid models: 1,400 kilograms; provisional value). The optional roof rails – available in either High-gloss Black or Aluminium satinated – can be used to secure roof boxes or bicycle carriers and provide an additional design accent.
The wide array of storage options further increases the practicality factor for everyday use and longer journeys. As well as the familiar glove compartment on the front passenger side, occupants will find a compartment integrated into the side-opening armrest and an additional storage space below it. The front section of the centre console houses a smartphone slot and two cup holders. The door pockets in both the front and rear are designed to accommodate drinks bottles.
Two-zone automatic climate control and sports steering wheel as standard, M Sport package with specific interior features
Intelligent two-zone automatic climate control is fitted as standard in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer, along with a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation and windscreen wiper control. The latest version of the standard Sport leather steering wheel has extremely highquality accent trim in Pearl-effect Chrome, large thumb rests and multifunction buttons. Steering wheel heating can be ordered as an option.
If the M Sport package is specified, the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will offer drivers an optionally heated M leather steering wheel with arresting three-spoke design and shift paddles. This equipment option also comprises an anthracite-coloured M headliner and Sensatec/Alcantara sport seats, M pedals, an M driver’s footrest and an M logo in the information display.
Premium ambience with room for extensive individualisation
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also reveals its premium character in the host of options available for precise individualisation. The surfaces of the instrument panel and front door shoulders can be specified as an option in Sensatec with eye-catching contrast stitching. Also available as an option is a mirror package, which brings light projections from the exterior mirrors, an electric folding function for the exterior mirrors and an automatic dimming function for the interior mirror and the exterior mirror on the driver’s side. The standard interior lighting incorporates the footwells, the door openers and the storage compartments in the centre console, plus reading lights, the ambient light from the headliner and the door entry lights. The optional ambient lighting provides richly atmospheric interior illumination. The lighting’s distribution, brightness and colour scheme can be configured in the iDrive menu. And this option also includes the Dynamic interior light function, whose pulsating light signals indicate an incoming phone call or an open door when the engine is running.
With a glass surface measuring around one square metre, the optional panoramic glass sunroof offers an array of possibilities when it comes to flooding the interior of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer with light and fresh air. The roller blind cover for the glass roof now has a multilayer design and, like the glass panel itself, is electrically operated.
Navigation system as standard, audio enjoyment as desired
A Bluetooth interface, four USB-C ports and a 12V power socket in both the centre console and the boot all come as standard in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. The likewise standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and an audio system with six speakers. The optional Harman Kardon Sound System raises the number of speakers to 12. Its mid-range speakers are hidden discreetly under the cloth of the door trim, while the tweeters have highquality stainless steel covers.
A noticeable gain in driving pleasure, and a measurable reduction in fuel consumption and emission levels, are key features of the drive portfolio available for the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. The petrol and diesel engines chosen for the new model have been taken from the latest generation of the BMW Group’s EfficientDynamics engine family. A more advanced and more powerful version of 48V mild hybrid technology making its debut in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer further enhances sports performance and efficiency. The ongoing commitment to powertrain electrification will continue through 2022 with the introduction of two model variants with plug-in hybrid drive.
All the engines channel their power through a newly developed sevenspeed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, which is fitted as standard. Drive is sent from here to the front wheels, as was the case in the predecessor model.
Petrol engines with optimised fuel consumption and emission levels
A choice of three petrol engines with three or four cylinders and the latest generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology will be available from the market launch of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. The latest round of updates has focused primarily on the combustion cycle and the geometry of the combustion chambers, in addition to the ignition and injection system.
The Miller cycle shortens the opening time of the intake valves, which subsequently leads to an increase in the effectiveness of the turbocharging system and the intercooler. This reduces fuel consumption and emission levels significantly across the entire load range and thus in day-to-day driving. The effect is further enhanced by redesigning the intake port and combustion chamber to optimise both mixture formation and combustion efficiency. Using an active coil with integrated electronics also allows the ignition system to be adapted to the new combustion process, while the mixture preparation is optimised using a new dual injection system. In addition to the current high-pressure injection system, some of the fuel is now injected into the combustion chambers via a low-pressure system. The resultant flow behaviour inside the inlets and the cylinders results in reduced particulate formation and lower CO2 emission levels. The idling sound of the engines also benefits from the new injection technology.
2022 BMW 230e xDrive Active Tourer Exterior Detail
Three latest-generation petrol engines will be available from the launch of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine powers the BMW 223i Active Tourer. Delivering a maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 150 kW/204 hp at 5,000 – 6,500 rpm and the electric motor with up to 14 kW/19 hp) and peak torque of 360 Nm/265 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 320 Nm/236 lbft at 1,500 – 4,000 rpm and the electric motor with up to 55 Nm/41 lb-ft), the range-topping model sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.0 seconds. Its fuel consumption and emission figures as determined in the WLTP test cycle are 6.6 to 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres (42.8 – 47.1 mpg imp) and 149 to 137 grams per kilometre.
There are also two new three-cylinder petrol engines to choose from, each with a displacement of 1.5 litres. The more powerful of the two model variants has a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 115 kW/156 hp at 4,700 – 6,500 rpm and the electric motor with up to 14 kW/19 hp) and peak torque of 280 Nm/206 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 240 Nm/177 lb-ft at 1,500 – 4,400 rpm and the electric motor with up to 55 Nm/41 lb-ft), accelerating the new BMW 220i Active Tourer from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds. Its lively power delivery comes with combined fuel consumption of 6.5 to 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres (43.5 – 47.9 mpg imp) and CO2 levels of 148 to 133 grams per kilometre based on the WLTP cycle.
The three-cylinder engine of the new BMW 218i Active Tourer delivers 100 kW/136 hp and maximum torque of 230 Nm (170 lb-ft), enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.0 seconds. Its exemplary efficiency is reflected in combined fuel consumption of 6.8 to 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres (41.5 – 45.6 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 154 to 140 grams per kilometre based on the WLTP cycle.
Diesel engine with even greater efficiency
The new BMW 218d Active Tourer will be offered with a four-cylinder diesel engine that has also undergone extensive further development. A key feature of this new diesel engine generation is the use of frictionoptimised pistons made of tempered steel. A graphite coating for the piston skirts also contributes to reducing friction and noise levels. An active oil separator with map-controlled electric motor provides additional cleaning of the combustion gases emitted from the cylinder head cover. To reduce fuel consumption and emission levels even further, the efficiency of the two-stage turbocharging system has also been optimised and improvements made to the common rail injection system and the exhaust gas recirculation system.
With a maximum output of 110 kW/150 hp and peak torque of 360 Nm (265 lb-ft), the new version of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine powering the BMW 218d Active Tourer provides acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.8 seconds. The values of 5.3 to 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres (53.3 – 58.9 mpg imp) for combined fuel consumption and 138 to 125 grams per kilometre for CO2 emission levels, as determined in the WLTP test cycle, underline the further increase in powertrain efficiency.
Standard: seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is the brand’s first model to feature a new version of the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, which is to be found on the standard equipment list for all model variants. The latest generation of BMW’s automatic transmission features all-electric actuation, a larger gear spread and higher internal efficiency. It also offers a gear selection strategy adapted to the route profile and now includes a coasting function in all My Modes options, enabling it to contribute even more effectively to increasing efficiency. Having clutches that are open when the vehicle is stationary, combined with optimised moving-off behaviour, improves the gear-changing experience and driving comfort. When the engine is switched off, the transmission now automatically shifts into the P position.
The seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission provides extremely fast and smooth gear changes. It combines two subtransmissions in one housing, enabling it to preselect the appropriate gear in good time before each gear change. In the course of its continuing development, the shift dynamics have been further enhanced and downshifting within the same sub-transmission is now possible. A seven-speed Steptronic Sport dual-clutch transmission is also available as an option. It offers extremely dynamic shifting characteristics and can be operated using shift paddles on the steering wheel.
Debut for new 48V mild hybrid technology
Electrification in the form of mild hybrid technology has enabled the drive systems of the BMW 223i Active Tourer and BMW 220i Active Tourer models to deliver improved driving dynamics and optimised efficiency.
The 48V electric motor used as a starter generator and acting as a power booster for the combustion engine is now integrated for the first time into the automatic transmission. It delivers an extra 14 kW/19 hp of power and is used to provide extra torque when accelerating. It makes its presence felt when an immediate surge of power is needed – when pulling away from a standstill, for example, and during mid-range sprints. The powerful starter generator also increases the smoothness of the Auto Start Stop function.
The energy required for the extra electric power is stored in an additional 48V battery located underneath the boot, which is charged by means of recuperation during overrun and braking phases. A charging capacity of 15 kW is achieved in the process. In addition to supplying power to the electric motor, the 48V battery also feeds the vehicle’s electrical system with energy recovered during braking.
Two plug-in hybrid models added to the range
Plug-in hybrid technology provides an even more intense form of electrification in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer and is expected to be added in the model range from summer 2022. The launch of the BMW 230e xDrive Active Tourer (fuel consumption combined: 1.4 – 1.1 litres/100 km [201.8 – 256.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 20.0 kWh – 17.9 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 30 – 22 g/km based on the WLTP cycle) and the BMW 225e xDrive Active Tourer (fuel consumption combined: 1.4 – 1.1 litres/100 km [201.8 – 256.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 20.0 kWh – 17.9 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 30 – 22 g/km based on the WLTP cycle) will bring two plug-in hybrid models to the line-up, each delivering significant gains in terms of sportiness, efficiency, electric range and charging capacity over their predecessor. This has been made possible using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology in plug-in hybrid models manufactured by BMW for the very first time. It consists of a current-excited electric motor – installed in a single housing along with the power electronics and transmission – plus the latest battery cell and charging technology. The high-voltage battery stands out with a particularly flat design and is located low down in the underfloor structure. This gives the plug-in hybrid models a low centre of gravity, which has a positive effect on agility.
In both models, the electric motor acting on the rear wheels is combined with a three-cylinder petrol engine incorporating the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which drives the front wheels. With the aid of an intelligent powertrain management system, this results in hybrid-specific all-wheel drive that delivers exceptional sportiness, directional stability and traction in all driving situations. Maximum output is 240 kW/326 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 110 kW/150 hp and the electric motor with up to 130 kW/177 hp) for the BMW 230e xDrive Active Tourer and 180 kW/245 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 100 kW/136 hp and the electric motor with up to 80 kW/109 hp) for the BMW 225e xDrive Active Tourer. The net energy content of their high-voltage batteries has been increased to 14.9 kWh (gross energy content: 16.3 kWh). Maximum charging capacity is up from the 3.7 kW of the predecessor model to 7.4 kW. This means that the high-voltage battery can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent capacity in around 2.5 hours. When plugged into a conventional household socket, the charging process is completed in under eight hours. Electric range has also been increased substantially and is now up to 80 kilometres (50 miles) based on the WLTP cycle. (All figures relating to power output and charging capacity, battery capacity, fuel and electric power consumption, CO2 emissions and electric range are provisional. At temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius, the purely electric driving mode of plug-in hybrid models will not be available until the battery has warmed up to an operational condition after the vehicle has travelled a few kilometres.)
Chassis technology and driving experience
The chassis technology in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer has been engineered to deliver the brand’s customary sporting flair combined with impressive levels of ride comfort in every situation. With a body construction that reduces weight while increasing rigidity, a long wheelbase, and wider tracks than its predecessor, the car’s basic design provides the ideal blueprint for the job at hand. The overriding aim when developing the axles, steering, springs, dampers and all control systems specially for this model was to produce a sweet and harmonious drive that could be experienced not just in everyday driving, but also when powering along country roads or travelling long distances. Consideration was also given to the specific requirements when driving with a heavy load or towing a trailer.
In addition, the integrated application of all the powertrain and chassis systems ensures precisely controllable handling even when the car is being pushed hard and in all weather and road conditions. The nearactuator wheel slip limitation function included as standard improves both traction and directional stability. The integrated braking system is another new feature, as is the frequency-selective damping for the optional adaptive M suspension.
Newly developed componentry for front and rear axle
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer has adopted its predecessor’s design principle for the front and rear axle. However, all components of the single-joint spring strut axle at the front have been developed almost completely from scratch. The new axle kinematics and increased rigidity help to give the car agile turn-in response and steering feel that is largely unaffected by torque steer. The supports for the hydromounts are now made from aluminium, shaving around three kilograms off the vehicle’s weight. Following readjustment of the steering axle, the caster offset has been increased by some 15 per cent over the predecessor model, which has a positive effect on both steering feedback and straight-line stability.
The modular three-link rear axle fitted on all model variants also comes with all the right ingredients for sporty handling. Featuring a bespoke design with remarkably high rigidity, it is partnered by a rear axle subframe with a rigid mounting and promises precise wheel guidance even under high lateral acceleration. Thanks to the separate arrangement of the springs and dampers, they take up less space, freeing up additional room for passengers in the rear and luggage. The use of anti-roll bar mounts with high preload on both axles improves both roll stabilisation and steering precision during dynamic cornering. A new wheel bearing design that minimises both friction and weight is an additional factor in the superior efficiency of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer.
The suspension and damping systems have also undergone an extensive upgrade with a view to enhancing long-distance comfort. For the first time, the front axle has been equipped with extra, lift-related damping using an additional sleeve on the dampers. This reduces body movement when driving over small bumps, while also ensuring excellent transient behaviour in corners.
Adaptive M suspension with frequency-selective damping, a 15- millimetre drop in ride height and sport steering
Adaptive M suspension with mechanically controlled adjustable dampers is available as an option for all model variants in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer range, including the plug-in hybrids. Both agility and long-distance comfort benefit from the system’s frequencyselective damping. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out with the help of additional valves that are active on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers comfortable response when absorbing minor bumps in the road surface combined with sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations.
The specially designed damper system brings about a 15-millimetre drop in the vehicle’s ride height on all variants with the exception of the plugin hybrid models. And sport steering is part of the adaptive M suspension specification on all models too. This particular version of the Electric Power Steering system features a more direct rack ratio, along with the Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance also included with the standard steering.
Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for extremely quick, precise response
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also now comes with nearactuator wheel slip limitation to maximise the car’s agility and poise in challenging driving situations. This traction control system is integrated into the engine management, eliminating the long signal paths to the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and allowing corrective inputs to be applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation thereby ensures optimum traction even on slippery roads, superb straight-line poise and assurance when accelerating hard and excellent handling stability in corners.
The functions provided by the DSC system include not only anti-lock braking (ABS) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), but also a variety of stabilising functions and the drive-off assistant. The Performance Control function gives the car even more agile handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the front wheels according to the situation at hand. In order to optimise directional stability during heavy braking on surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the right-hand and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse is applied to help the driver correct the car’s line. The functioning of the electromechanical parking brake is also integrated into the rear brake callipers by means of the DSC system.
Integrated braking system optimises handling characteristics
The integrated braking system in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is unique in its segment and delivers outstanding stopping power and reliable pedal feel. This system brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered using an electric actuator, an operating principle that generates pressure more dynamically and ensures significantly faster and more precise interventions by the DSC. The integrated braking system generates a degree of stopping power that is matched exactly to the driver’s inputs, while also producing consistent pedal feel. The use of an electric actuator means braking requests from the driver assistance systems are likewise translated into extremely short stopping distances, improving active safety.
The braking system in the 2-Series Active Tourer employs single-piston floating-calliper disc brakes at the front and rear. A brake pad wear indicator is included as standard and provides precise information on the remaining service life of the brake pads in the relevant iDrive menu.
The diameter of the tyres fitted on the standard 16-inch or (in the case of the BMW 223i Active Tourer) 17-inch light-alloy wheels has been increased to 680 millimetres, which improves ride comfort at the same time as giving the vehicle greater visual presence when viewed from the side. The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also comes as standard with a tyre pressure indicator for each individual wheel that provides an early warning of any loss of pressure.
Driver assistance systems
Comfort and safety in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer are further enhanced by the presence of standard and optional driver assistance systems whose scope has been expanded significantly compared with the predecessor model and is unmatched by any rival. In fact, the new edition of the all-rounder boasts the largest selection of automated assistance functions ever offered in a compact model from BMW. These support the driver or lighten their workload in a wide variety of driving situations and when parking. And they process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards, and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs.
As far as functionality and availability are concerned, the automated driving and parking systems fitted in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer rank among the best on the market. Existing functions can be improved or expanded by means of Remote Software Upgrades, and customers can also use Functions on Demand to select and import a range of functions at a later stage, such as the Steering and Lane Control Assistant (availability depends on the hardware fitted in the vehicle and the market conditions).
The right speed for every situation – automatically
Highlight features enabling automated Level 2 driving, as defined by SAE international standard J3016, include automatic Speed Limit Assist and route monitoring when using Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. Both these functions provide the driver with convenient assistance for driving at an appropriate speed.
Automatic Speed Limit Assist controls the car’s speed by both maintaining the desired safe distance from vehicles travelling in front and observing speed restrictions along the route. It takes into account speed limits detected either by the Speed Limit Info system or by looking ahead along the route using data from the navigation system. If the relevant setting is selected in the BMW iDrive menu, the maximum permitted speed registered in this way is automatically adopted as the new set speed.
The route monitoring function additionally takes into account the nature of the route being followed. This function uses the navigation system’s map to look ahead and reduce the car’s speed when approaching a corner, a roundabout, a junction or an exit. The system also adjusts the speed as required before entering built-up areas. After passing through the applicable section of the route at a suitable speed, the system will accelerate the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer back up to the speed set by the driver or the current speed limit, as appropriate.
Cruise Control with brake function and front-collision warning with new functions included as standard
Cruise Control with brake function is fitted in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer as standard. The system keeps the vehicle at a constant speed on downhill stretches, for instance, and also adjusts to a comfortable speed in bends by applying the brakes.
Front-collision warning can also be found on the standard equipment roster for the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. In addition to Collision Warning with braking function, and pedestrian and cyclist warning with braking function, the latest version of the system provides effective assistance for preventing accidents in numerous other situations too. The system now reacts to oncoming traffic, for example. And it also provides additional safety when turning right in urban areas (in countries where vehicles drive on the right) by warning the driver of pedestrians and cyclists approaching the vehicle parallel to the road from the front or rear. This reduces the risk of a collision between the vehicle and pedestrians or cyclists when turning off.
The front-collision warning system now also comes to the driver’s aid when turning left (in countries where vehicles drive on the right). If a vehicle is approaching on the side of the road the driver needs to cross, visible and acoustic warnings are triggered and the brakes are applied to prevent the driver from continuing with their turn-off manoeuvre.
Driving Assistant with new exit warning function increases comfort and safety
The functions included in the optional Driving Assistant include Rear Collision Prevention and rear crossing traffic warning, which reduces the danger of a collision when reversing towards roads that are difficult to see into. Lane Change Warning increases safety when performing lane changes and overtaking manoeuvres on multi-lane roads. It alerts the driver to vehicles in the adjacent lane that are within a critical distance or approaching quickly from the rear. The warning takes the form of an illuminating signal in the exterior mirror. Meanwhile, a steering input helps the driver guide their car back into the correct lane.
Another new feature is the exit warning function, which provides a safety boost when the vehicle is stationary. It activates visible and acoustic signals if a vehicle or cyclist is approaching the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer at speed and there is a risk of collision on either side of the vehicle. The driver or front passenger is alerted to the danger by flashing LEDs in the mirror or the ambient lighting. An acoustic warning is also emitted.
Enhanced safety and comfort over longer distances: Driving Assistant Plus
The optional Driving Assistant Plus optimises comfort and safety on longer journeys to good effect. This camera- and radar-based system incorporates the Speed Limit Info system including no-overtaking indicator, which also warns of speed restrictions ahead. A manual Speed Limit Assist function is also available, allowing the driver to import the speed limit registered by the Speed Limit Info system as the new set speed at the push of a button.
Another feature of Driving Assistant Plus is Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, which is capable of not only maintaining the preferred speed, but also automatically keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead by using sensor data from cameras and radar. This system works when driving at speeds of 30 – 180 km/h (19 – 112 mph) and is capable of braking the vehicle to a standstill, if necessary, and even setting off again automatically after short pauses lasting up to 30 seconds. The distance information can be shown in the optional BMW Head-Up Display. Linking up with Active Cruise Control allows brings automatic Speed Limit Assist into play.
Lane Departure Warning with lane return is also included. This system now analyses the road conditions at hand even more precisely. On extremely narrow roads, the course correction assistance is suppressed so that if a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, the driver can easily move onto the side of the road.
2022 BMW 230e xDrive Active Tourer Interior
The complete package: Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assistant
If the optional Driving Assistant Professional package is specified, Active Cruise Control can be used at speeds up to 210 km/h (130 mph). Drivers of the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer can also utilise the services of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant to continue along their current course – likewise at up to 210 km/h (130 mph) – with the assistance of smooth steering corrections. Active Navigation is also one of the functions of Driving Assistant Plus and helps the driver to keep to the route calculated by the navigation system on multi-lane roads.
Further components of Driving Assistant Professional are the Emergency Lane Assistant (can be used in selected European countries) and the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. The Evasion Assistant helps to avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians that appear suddenly. As soon as an evasive manoeuvre fitting such a scenario is detected, the system helps the driver direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane with steering inputs. Meanwhile, Road Priority Warning, Wrong-way Warning and front crossing traffic warning help to actively prevent collisions.
Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview of the activated systems and their functionality. To this end, the central area of the cockpit display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of the vehicle and its surroundings. This is where the driver can see an image of the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the cameras and sensors in the driver’s current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes.
Providing the help required with parking and manoeuvring: Reversing Assist Camera, Reversing Assistant, Parking Assistant
Drivers of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer also benefit from effective assistance when parking and manoeuvring thanks to technology such as Active Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. This system uses visual and acoustic alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles to the sides and rear of the vehicle. A Reversing Assist Camera is also available as standard.
Added to which, the latest version of the Parking Assistant is also part of standard specification and offers an even wider range of uses. It helps the driver to select and park in spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Suitable spaces are detected using ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle drives past. Instead of just using other vehicles to help it select a parking space and straighten the vehicle when parking, the system is now also able to use the kerb as a guide. What’s more, the Parking Assistant can be used both to enter and exit spaces. As well as the necessary steering inputs, it now also carries out the acceleration, braking and gear changes required for the manoeuvre.
The Reversing Assistant is another element of the Parking Assistant. It offers the handy option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multistorey car parks or entrances to courtyards. To do this, it stores the steering movements for any section the car has just driven forward through at no more than 36 km/h (22 mph). The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 metres by steering it along the same line it took when moving forward. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedal and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Reversing Assistant can back the car up automatically at a maximum 9 km/h (5.5 mph).
The functions contained in the optional Parking Assistant Plus provide an excellent overview in many different situations. Surround View (including Top View), Panorama View and 3D View create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings, which is shown from various angles in the control display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.
The BMW Drive Recorder available on cars with Parking Assistant Plus uses the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video images all around the vehicle, so these can be stored and later either played back on the control display when the vehicle is stationary or exported via the USB interface. It therefore allows the driver to record high-definition videos up to 60 seconds in length while driving through spectacular countryside or performing eye-catching driving manoeuvres, for example, and then save them to a connected USB device. In the event of a collision, up to 20 seconds of video taken both before and after the impact (i.e. 40 seconds in total) are stored.
Likewise to be found on the options list is the Remote Theft Recorder which, when activated, brings another new and optional feature into play in the form of the interior camera. If the vehicle is stolen, this system sends a message to the customer’s smartphone. The customer can then access and store the images from the interior camera and videos recorded by the cameras at the front and rear of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer and on its exterior mirrors.
Display and operating system, connectivity
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is the first premium compact model to be equipped with the most recent incarnation of the BMW iDrive display and operating system. Boasting new-generation BMW Operating System 8 software along with exceptionally powerful connectivity and data processing capabilities, it takes interaction between driver and vehicle into the digital future. The new BMW iDrive system greatly increases the ways in which drivers can enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment and communication functions and also use digital services.
The user experience aboard the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is underpinned by the seamless interaction between the BMW Curved Display, voice control, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and the optional BMW Head-Up Display. The new display grouping and the continually expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant mean the new BMW iDrive has been deliberately geared towards interaction using touch operation and natural language. As a result, operating steps carried out with the BMW Controller on the predecessor model can now be performed more easily and intuitively using the touchscreen, voice control or the buttons on the steering wheel.
Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics
The BMW Curved Display fitted as standard in the new 2-Series Active Tourer is formed by a 10.25-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 10.7 inches. The screens are housed together behind a glass surface that curves towards the driver so they merge into a single fully digital, high-resolution unit. This is angled clearly towards the driver to good ergonomic effect, making the intuitive touch control even more straightforward. At the same time, the front passenger is also in an ideal position to view the displays and operate the system by either touch or voice control.
The BMW Curved Display’s state-of-the-art graphics and the operating system’s menu structure have been designed to have a smartphonestyle appearance, making them perfect for intuitive touch control. The user interface impresses with its striking forms, dynamic light effects, strong depth of colour and modern colour worlds. The graphical layout of the information display and the content shown in the centre of the display can both be customised to suit the driving situation and personal preferences. The clearly structured arrangement of widgets on the control display’s home screen provides a simple overview of the menu options. These can be selected with a touch of the screen and individually configured by the driver as they please. Frequently used functions are given a particularly prominent position.
The automatic climate control is also now operated by voice control or by touching the control display. Controls for adjusting the set temperature on the driver and front passenger side are shown permanently, while airflow, air distribution and the seat heating function can be controlled by calling up the climate control menu.
Welcome Scenario to greet the driver of the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer
The engaging user experience starts before the driver has even reached the vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario. Ultrawideband (UWB) radio technology allows precision location pinpointing between the vehicle and the key or compatible smartphone, meaning that the car knows exactly where the driver is approaching from and how far away they are – to within a few centimetres.
Once the distance drops below three metres, the vehicle prepares and carries out a perfectly choreographed sequence of steps. This begins with an orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights, before the projector lights built into the exterior mirrors switch on and the vehicle automatically unlocks. The car then plays a start-up animation on the BMW Curved Display, loads the BMW ID settings and establishes a connection with the smartphone, before finishing with a customised welcome window showing a personal greeting as well as handy suggestions and information.
Personalised driving experience with the new My Modes
The new My Modes create an all-encompassing interplay of vehicle functions, displays and interior ambience. They can be selected very easily by voice command or by using a button on the centre console that replaces the Driving Experience Control switch located in the same place in the outgoing model. Drivers of the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer have a choice of PERSONAL, SPORT and EFFICIENT My Modes. These each activate specific settings for the powertrain and steering, the style of the readouts on the BMW Curved Display and the interior lighting.
PERSONAL mode activates a balanced setting for the vehicle characteristics and allows the displays and interior lighting to be adjusted to suit individual preferences. In SPORT mode, the powertrain and steering are configured for a dynamic driving style, while the paredback readouts and red highlighting in the information display help the driver to focus on the task at hand. EFFICIENT mode, meanwhile, is clearly geared towards sustainable driving and configures the vehicle to keep consumption as low as possible. Here, a calming shade of blue sets the tone for the display readouts.
Fast, accurate, informative: the BMW Maps navigation system
The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system offers significantly enhanced performance and excellent accuracy along with a simplified method of destination entry. The new-generation navigation system enables extremely fast route calculation, carried out dynamically and based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The arrival time is calculated using an anticipatory method which factors in the usual traffic levels along the entire route. Drivers can enter any words to search for a destination or use voice control. The adaptive navigation system recognises places that are driven to frequently and highlights them as points of interest (POI) in the map view on subsequent journeys.
With Connected Parking, BMW Maps is also able to provide assistance when searching for a parking space close to the destination. When the driver selects their destination in the navigation system, they receive an indication of the parking situation at the destination for their estimated time of arrival. Shortly before arriving, the driver is given information on the nearest multi-storey car park as well as proposed routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination.
Precision navigating with Augmented View
The new Augmented View function optionally available to supplement the navigation system’s map view enables the driver to find their way on the road with great accuracy. A live video stream from the driver’s perspective is shown on the control display and augmented by supplementary information that matches the context. When dealing with confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.
Using graphics to enhance reality opens up new ways of ensuring drivers enjoy a safe and relaxed journey to their destination. As well as superimposing arrows, points of interest (POI) of relevance to the driver can also be highlighted in the live video stream. Tapping the indicated POIs brings up further information on them, such as user ratings, opening times and images. The use of Augmented View to help drivers search for a parking spot is a feature not yet found in any competitor. This function displays information on the applicable parking regulations in augmented reality form in the control display’s split-screen view.
Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gaining additional skills. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or operate the optional panoramic glass roof, for instance. Various functions of the driver assistance systems in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer can likewise be voice controlled. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is additionally capable of recognising routines and proactively suggesting that the driver automates them. For instance, the driver’s window can be opened automatically when the vehicle reaches a location entered using GPS coordinates, such as the entrance to a garage or multi-storey car park.
When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics appear in the control display to emphasise the system’s interactive character. The graphic “turns” towards the speaker, thereby visualising how the system is listening attentively to what is being said. This new visualisation approach features spheres of light in differing sizes and brightness levels, giving the assistant more space and new ways of expressing itself.
Interior camera for snapshots; glancing inside the car using the My BMW App
The new overhead interior camera can be used by the car’s occupants to take snapshots during the journey, allowing them to capture special moments and share them with friends and family. Pictures can be shared by simply scanning a QR code in the control display with any smartphone connected to the car via WiFi.
Customers are also able to have pictures from the interior camera sent to their smartphone using the My BMW App’s remote function if they wish to glance inside the car to check whether bags or other items have been left there, for example. The interior camera is also activated when the Remote Theft Recorder is triggered.
Optimum connectivity with 5G and Personal eSIM
The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is the first series-produced premium compact model to move into the era of 5G. If the customer selects the optional Personal eSIM, it will be integrated into the vehicle alongside the Vehicle eSIM. DSDA (Dual SIM Dual Active) capability allows both eSIMs to be active simultaneously. This also means that both eSIMs – i.e. also the Vehicle eSIM – are designed for the new 5G mobile technology. eSIMs have so far featured mainly on smart devices such as tablets and smartwatches. The Personal eSIM essentially turns the car into another digital and connected device in the customer’s ecosystem. Mobile reception is significantly improved by the vehicle’s own 5G antenna system.
The Personal eSIM allows the customer to use the communications and connectivity functions covered by their mobile contract from their car with ease – even in situations where they don’t have their smartphone with them. Users can extend an existing mobile contract by activating the Personal eSIM via one of the available network operators. What’s more, the Personal eSIM isn’t linked to just one car, but the user’s BMW ID – meaning it can be transferred to other BMW vehicles with Personal eSIM functionality. The eSIM is configured automatically when users sign in with their BMW ID, after which it is available immediately.
The ability to activate the Personal eSIM is being gradually expanded in collaboration with mobile providers and network operators, and depends on the individual parameters in each country. Customers in Germany and Japan should be able to activate the Personal eSIM via participating network operators as soon as the model is launched. Personalisation using the BMW ID
When interacting with the new BMW iDrive in the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer, customers benefit from increasing personalisation of the user experience based on the BMW ID. This is used for securely storing even more personalised settings and transferring them between vehicles. A PIN code can be created or the BMW ID associated with a particular key to prevent other vehicle users from accessing personal data. When signing in to a vehicle for the first time, simply scanning a QR code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID on a smartphone. If the user has the My BMW App and is therefore already in possession of a BMW ID, this will be automatically imported into the car via the app when the QR code is scanned.
The BMW ID can be created and activated effortlessly and securely in vehicles with BMW Operating System 8 or BMW Operating System 7. Once the BMW ID has been imported, the driver will receive a personal greeting which will include the customised profile image the driver can create in the My BMW App. At the same time, personal settings for seat position, exterior mirrors, navigation system, driver assistance functions, display layouts, shortcuts and favourites as well as infotainment system settings will be imported automatically. Personalised suggestions from the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are also stored in the BMW ID, together with individually selected wake words and privacy settings.
Smartphone linking and integration of third-party services
Standard specification for the new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer comprises optimised smartphone integration, e.g. via Apple CarPlay, allowing customers to access an array of digital services such as the voice-controlled assistant Siri, map apps, music streaming services like Apple Music, and the messaging service WhatsApp. The wireless WiFi connection between smartphone and vehicle enables the services to be integrated directly into the car’s display and operating system. Information from the apps can be viewed both in the control display and – in a cleverly presented way – in the instrument cluster or optional Head-Up Display.
The BMW Group has extended the reach of seamless connectivity in its vehicles with the addition of another customer-centric service. Android Auto™ provides a simple, safe way to use smartphone functions such as music, media and messaging apps during a journey. Customers can interact with their smartphone with the help of the Google Assistant and the actions carried out are shown on the car’s information display. Highlights of the interplay with Android Auto™ include user-friendly and wireless connectivity and the intelligent integration of Google Maps™ navigation instructions in the BMW Head-Up Display.
The My BMW App is available in more than 40 countries for both iOS and Android operating systems, and can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. It acts as a new universal interface to the car, providing information on the vehicle’s status at any time. Depending on the equipment fitted, it also enables remote operation of functions such as vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors or monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity (Remote 3D View). The auxiliary climate control system in the plug-in-hybrid models can likewise be operated remotely. Functions also include the ability to send destination addresses from a suitably equipped smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system. The My BMW App makes it even easier for customers to log in to any current BMW model with their personal BMW ID.
The optional BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer with their Apple iPhone via Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, making a conventional car key superfluous. As customers approach the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer, they are welcomed by a staged lighting effect using the exterior lights, and the vehicle unlocks just before they reach the door. Once they have got in, the Apple iPhone can be simply left in the user’s pocket or placed in the smartphone slot. The Digital Key can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can share access with up to five other users, and has the option of creating a configuration for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more.

Always up to the minute: Remote Software Upgrades for over-the-air updates
The BMW Group is one of the key players in the field of over-the-air function upgrades. By 2020 it was carrying out the largest upgrade campaigns of any European carmaker. The Remote Software Upgrades function keeps the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer right up to date with the latest software. The content of the upgrades ranges from new services to improved vehicle functions. All updates can be imported over the air, either on a smartphone via the My BMW App or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card. The intelligent connectivity technology also makes it possible to incorporate additional vehicle functions at a later date – for a limited period of time, if desired.
