2021 MG 5
Design is really the MG 5 sedan’s big drawcard, for better or worse. While past MG models have been compared to Mazda’s design language, the MG 5 sedan wears a fresh face – albeit one that draws some comparisons to that of the new Hyundai Sonata. Beneath the intriguing sheet metal the MG 5 is powered by a choice of two 1.5-litre SAIC-developed four-cylinder engines; either a naturally aspirated version rated at 89kW, or a turbocharged variant claiming 129kW.
Transmission choices include a five-speed manual, four-speed automatic, or six-speed auto for the turbo variant, with drive sent to the front wheels.
- 1.5 turbo with 172 hp and 275 Nm. Gearbox is a racy 7-speed wet-DCT. It will do 0-100 in 8.5 seconds.
- 1.5 with 120 hp and 150 Nm mated to a CVT or to a 5-speed manual. The latter is interesting as not many Chinese automakers are offering 5-speeders in a brand-new car. Most go for 6 these days. The engine seems very under-powered too.
- Size: 4675/1842/1480, wheelbase is 2680.
- Price starts at 67.900 yuan and ends at 99.900 yuan ($10.272-15.113). That’s a decent base price for a car of this size, but you got to deal with that old 1.5. The turbo starts at 88.900.
