It maintained this position last year when over 230,000 units were sold worldwide, of which around 30,000 in Italy, where each year it reached a new sales record, establishing itself as the best-selling foreign B-SUV since 2015. In Italy, Captur sales have always been at the top of the segment with 189,948 vehicles sold, Captur has been the best-selling foreign B-SUV since 2013.
In 2020 the E-TECH version arrives in an increasingly electrified market: the hybrid marks + 63%, the Plug-in + 210% and the electric + 110% compared to 2019 and in Italy the weight of electric and electrified engines increases from 6% in 2019 to 15% in 2020.
In this market that has become extremely competitive, New CAPTUR renews, evolves and enriches the range with the E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid offer: effective, accessible and located in the heart of the market.
New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid is positioned as the most accessible plug-in on the market.
E-TECH: And for electric, TECH for experience in F1
For a system developed at home, experience becomes a competitive factor. Renault, pioneer and leader of the European electric market for over 10 years, responds to the evolution of the market in terms of power supplies with a 100% electric range made up of 7 models, where Nuova ZOE is today the best-selling electric car in Italy. with over 3,400 cumulative registered units at the end of September 2020 (+ 91.2%).
With the increase in battery autonomy, the possibility of recharging in ever shorter times and the reduction in prices driven by state interventions on the subject of incentives, many of the barriers to buying an electric have been eliminated or reduced. But developing electric vehicles also means promoting a wide range of services to create a sustainable ecosystem around them. The smart charging or intelligent charging, the vehicle to grid (V2G), or interactions between the vehicle and the electricity grid, and the second battery life – which are used as energy storage units from a renewable source – are the proof of the ambition Renault Group wants to be the protagonist of the current electric revolution.
Renault also boasts a history of over 40 years in motorsport and in particular Formula 1 has been at the center of the development of Renault’s E-TECH hybrid engines. These connections between motorsport and production vehicles are articulated around the use and recovery of energy, as well as the adoption of an innovative Multi-mode transmission with tooth engagement without clutch, an absolute novelty for production vehicles, which succeeds to combine and optimize the performance of the heat engine and the two electric motors.
The experience and skills acquired on the electric and in Formula 1 allow us to offer today an even more complete range of products and always in line with the needs and different mobility requirements of customers. This also translates into the proposal of hybrid engines with unique features and a revolutionary technology: E-TECH.
Renault vehicles with E-TECH hybrid technology now have a real multimodal hybrid engine, not a simple electrified thermal engine; they were designed to behave like electrically with thermal support and not vice versa.

Electrical experience transferred to E-TECH
Ten years of experience in the electric field have allowed the development of a hybrid technology that brings with it the best of Renault know-how.
This means:
- starting systematically to 100% by electric ,
- accelerations at the height of an electric vehicle
- regenerative braking which, as in an electric vehicle, allows high battery recharging capacity also thanks to the specific B-Mode (Brake Mode)which increases regeneration by slowing the car up to about 7 km / h.
All these features guarantee the New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid excellent energy optimization and better battery recharging during deceleration and braking.
E-TECH: system designed and developed for electric mode, thanks also to the CMF-B platform, a new modular platform, unprecedented in the Alliance which was designed from the outset to be electrified.
From Formula 1: energy management and innovative Multi-mode transmission
Renault engineers have developed a revolutionary solution to propose a coherent, original and exclusive hybrid offer, which boasts more than 150 patents and which is based on a so-called “series-parallel” hybrid architecture to offer the maximum of operating combinations. between the various engines and minimize CO2 during use. This hybrid technology can also count on the expertise of the Renault DP World F1 Team . The transmission and sharing of knowledge and skills between engineers responsible for F1 and production vehicles, has resulted in the E-TECH engines with:
- the architecture of the powertrain which has foundations in common with that of the single-seaters of the Renault DP World F1 Team.
- the introduction of the innovative Multi-mode transmission with tooth engagement and without friction.
- the great efficiency of the energy recovery and reuse system (Energy Management);
The E-TECH technology of the New Captur Plug-in Hybrid allows, in fact, to optimize the energy in the deceleration and braking phases. The system works autonomously without the need for support by carrying out the following actions:
- Battery regeneration during deceleration : when the driver lifts his foot from the accelerator pedal and the gear lever is positioned in Drive, the main electric motor acts as a generator and recovers the kinetic energy produced by deceleration to transform it into electrical energy and send it back to the battery.
- Regenerative braking: when the driver presses the brake pedal, the electric motor contributes to the braking and can recover the surplus energy to send it back to the battery, within the storage limits of the latter.

E-TECH technology: from Eolab in 2014 to Captur E-TECH
Developed and patented by Renault engineering, the New Captur Plug-in Hybrid E-TECH engine is the heir to that of the EOLAB concept car, presented at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the showcar, which boasts record fuel consumption of 1L / 100 km, with a plug-in hybrid engine, consisting of a 3-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and an innovative 3-speed clutch-free transmission, two of which are connected to the electric motor and the third to the thermal engine . Today the powertrain has been integrated into the new modular CMF-B platform, which was designed from the outset to enable electrification.
The powertrain architecture features two electric motors – an ” e-Motor ” for purely electric drive and a HSG (High-Voltage Starter Generator) type high-voltage starter – a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and the innovative Multi-mode transmission with clutch-free tooth engagement associated with a new generation 1.6-liter petrol engine, specially revised for the occasion.
The main electric motor e-Motor develops 49 KW (68hp) at 205 Nm and directly provides traction to the wheels by moving the car .
The HSG is the second electric motor and works primarily as a synchronizer. Working at a voltage of 400 Volts it instantly starts the heat engine bringing it immediately to the right rpm for the correct gear engagement, eg. when the driver requires power or when the battery is about to run out. Basically, thanks to the connection via gears to the flywheel of the petrol engine, if additional power is needed, the HSG instantly makes the heat engine available for this thrust or to recharge the battery.
In addition to this, the HSG recovers the kinetic energy of the combustion engine which is then sent to the battery.
The heat engine is a new generation 1.6 naturally aspirated petrol engine completely redesigned with innovative technologies such as the double injector, bore spray coating, particulate filter and is Euro 6dfull approved.
New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid always starts in electric, always “thinks” in electric and benefits from the immediate thrust of the electric motor. The heat engine, therefore, performs only simple functions: it offers support to the electric motor in the strongest moments of acceleration, it produces electricity for the battery and, turning only in the best and most efficient torque curves (2000-4000 rpm) it offers the efficiency best possible.
Thanks to the Multi-mode transmission, free of synchronizers and friction, which limits energy losses and reduces friction , the combination of the electric motors and the thermal is smooth, silent and free of drag for a pleasant and dynamic drive in all conditions.

Experience the 100% electric mode in full autonomy
The new Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid boasts unprecedented versatility: it can operate in electric mode without consuming fuel on daily journeys and take you on weekends or on holidays on long journeys, without worrying about distance and charging points. It therefore offers a wide range of possible uses without compromise.
The E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid 160 hp engine and the large capacity battery (9.8 kWh and 400V for a limited weight of 105 kg) with which it is equipped, offer New Captur an autonomy that allows it to circulate in full electric mode for 50 kilometers up to 135 km / h in mixed cycle (WLTP) and up to 65 kilometers in urban cycle (WLTP City).
The car battery can be recharged by connecting it to the mains, with recharging times from 3 to 5 hours, depending on the type of socket, including those for domestic use and with a maximum charging power of 3.7 KW.
The access to the fuel tank is located on the left of the vehicle and the charging socket on the right. The latter has a light that indicates the charging status by changing color: blue (charging), green (charging), orange (in stand-by), red (not charging).
When the battery is low, the New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid works like an E-TECH full hybrid model , with all the advantages of this engine.
New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid features a new MULTI-SENSE mode: PURE. Adjustable via display or with the appropriate button on the dashboard, it allows you to switch to full electric mode(provided there is sufficient reserve).
Another function called E-Save , in turn accessible from MULTI-SENSE, limits the use of the electric motor and favors the heat engine in order to maintain the recharge reserve (minimum 40% of the battery) to switch to electric driving. when you want (for example, to get around the city center).
The EV button, which allows you to force electric mode, is located below the multimedia display.
Advantages New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid: low fuel consumption and emissions but with high performance
The new Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid offers the same sensations and driving pleasure as experienced aboard electric vehicles : torque available immediately and acceleration response instantaneous. This dynamic behavior is clearly noticeable in the city and on extra-urban routes (where you frequently have to stop and accelerate), but also on fast-flowing roads thanks to the contribution of electricity that is obtained by pushing on the accelerator.
In the SPORT mode of the MULTI-SENSE , if the battery has sufficient energy, it is possible, by pressing down on the accelerator pedal, to exploit all three engines simultaneously , as the “series-parallel” architecture allows. The vehicle can thus rely on all the power available from the powertrain, for example, to overtake.

Versatile in use , it is also on the road, perfectly at ease in the city, where quiet driving prevails, but also on all roads where pleasure at the wheel passes from a certain dynamism.
In mixed cycle, New Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid consumes 1.4 L / 100 km, emits 32 grams of CO2 / km (WLTP values) and allows to take advantage of all the ecological advantages recognized by local institutions for hybrid cars. In fact, almost all the regional and local administrations of the country attribute tax concessions and real benefits, such as the exemption of the stamp for three years, the free parking on the blue lines, facilitated or free access to the ZTL areas and the permit to circulate during traffic blocks.
On board, comfort is improved thanks to the quietness of the electric motors : no noise from the bonnet, when driving without a heat engine, and considerable reduction in sound level, when the electric motors are assisted by the thermal engine and do not force it to run at high regime.
The new Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid boasts an excellent level of comfort for all occupants, while at the same time pushing the dynamic driving qualities high.
Inside, the passenger room does not change , the rear bench always moves 16 centimeters and the floor remains flat when the seats are folded. Charging cables can be stored in the 40-liter underfloor space without reducing the luggage compartment volume.
The new Captur E-TECH Plug-in Hybrid features the two largest displays in its category: the 10.2 ”digital dashboard and the 9.3” multimedia display with Renault EASY LINK system. These two displays make it easier to monitor the activated driving modes. On the dashboard display it is therefore possible to see the autonomy in electric mode, the exchanges of flows and energy recovery, the necessary charging time or the battery charge level.
