Vauxhall is continuing its journey towards electrification with the new Grandland X Hybrid4 all-wheel drive (AWD) plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

The new Grandland X Hybrid4 is Vauxhall’s first-ever plug-in hybrid and features state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology. The car’s powertrain comprises a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system with two electric motors (combined output 109hp), all-wheel drive and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery.

Together, the Euro 6d-TEMP-compliant petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, and offer a combined fuel consumption of 204mpg (WLTP), emitting just 34g/km CO₂. The Grandland X Hybrid4 achieves 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second motor and differential are integrated into the electrically-powered rear axle, providing all-wheel traction on demand.

The Grandland X Hybrid4 offers four driving modes – electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport. In pure electric mode, the car has a range of 35 miles (according to WLTP). In hybrid mode, the car automatically selects the most efficient method of propulsion. When travelling at low speeds, for example, the system switches to electric mode for zero-emission driving.

Fast, easy and convenient charging

The Grandland X Hybrid4 comes with a 3.7kW on-board charger, with an optional 7.4kW version also available. Vauxhall will also offer devices for fast charging at public stations, as well as wallboxes at home. With a 7.0kW wallbox, customers can fully charge the battery in less than two hours.

Vauxhall has introduced an exclusive charging offer available Grandland X Hybrid (and Corsa-e) customers. When opting for the brand’s new fully electric hatchback or hybrid SUV, customers will receive a free six-month membership to the Polar charging network, providing an easy, convenient and reliable means to charge their vehicle away from home.

With the free Polar subscription, drivers gain unlimited access to the UK’s biggest public charging network. Polar comprises over 7,000 charging points nationwide, including over 400 rapid charge points.

Most of the charging points are completely free to use. For others, the membership offer allows customers to avoid the service charge and only pay for the electricity consumed. Prices start from only 12p per kWh, which is cheaper than the average cost of charging at home. After the free six-month period, customers pay just £7.85 per month but, with no long-term contract or notice period, drivers are free to cancel at any point.

Any customers – private or company car drivers – can take advantage of the Vauxhall LEV charging offer. When purchasing a Corsa-e or Grandland X Hybrid4, the buyer will receive an inactive Polar card and leaflet from their retailer. The card can be activated online at www.polar-network.com/activate.

Energy saving and regenerative braking

The ‘e-Save’ section of the infotainment system allows the driver to determine how much battery energy needs to be reserved to ensure that the vehicle reaches its destination when in a zero-emissions zone. The driver can choose to save six or 12 miles of range, or reserve all of the battery energy. Drivers can access ‘e-Save’ via the infotainment system.

In addition, regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, allowing electrical energy to be returned to the battery and stored.

Ultimate driving efficiency and class-leading equipment

To further improve efficiency, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features a regenerative braking system, which can increase the electric range by up to 10 per cent.

Continuing Vauxhall’s reputation for class-leading on-board technology, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features the new Vauxhall Connect telematics service. This includes Live Navigation with real-time traffic information, as well as the ability to check key vehicle data via an app. Direct connection with roadside assistance provides the driver and passengers with additional peace-of-mind. Help can be reached within seconds by pressing the red button on the centre console. If the seatbelt tensioners or the airbags are deployed, the emergency call is activated automatically.

The Grandland X Hybrid4 is a key part of Vauxhall’s commitment to electrifying its entire product portfolio by 2024. The all-new, fully electric Corsa-e is now available to order. This will be followed by the new Vivaro Life MPV, new Vivaro LCV and the successor to the Mokka X – all of which will feature a fully electric version.

Vauxhall Grandland X Hybrid4 is the brand’s first all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid. Combining the best of electric drive and a combustion engine, the versatile SUV offers powerful performance with the benefit of electric range.

The new Grandland X Hybrid4 is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine and two electric motors. Together, the Euro 6d-TEMP-compliant petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, and offer a combined fuel consumption of 204mpg, emitting just 34g/km CO₂. The 200hp four-cylinder internal combustion engine was specially designed to meet the requirements of the hybrid vehicle. The Grandland X Hybrid4 achieves 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds.

The electric unit consists of two electric motors – one at the front and one at rear. The front electric motor transfers its power to the front wheels via an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second electric motor and the differential are integrated in the rear axle. This second electric drive turns the Grandland X Hybrid4 into a permanent all-wheel drive vehicle with optimum traction. The plug-in hybrid can cover up to 35 miles of pure-electric range, according to the WLTP driving cycle.

Four drive modes: emissions-free in town, powerful on the open road

With the Grandland X Hybrid4, drivers have the option of four different driving modes depending on their preferences and requirements.

The ‘Hybrid’ mode focuses on optimising the vehicle’s fuel consumption. The combustion engine and electric motors operate together or alternately, depending on driving conditions and driving style.

Activating ‘Electric’ mode switches the Grandland X Hybrid4 to pure electric drive. In most cases, power is delivered by the rear electric motor but the front motor is activated when required, for example if the driver pushes the accelerator pedal all the way in. At this point, the combustion engine is also temporarily engaged to provide maximum power. The top speed in pure electric drive is 84mph.

In ‘All-Wheel Drive’ mode, the Grandland X Hybrid4 is driven by the front and rear wheels. The top speed in ‘All-Wheel Drive’ is 146 mph.

‘Sport’ mode combines the power of the combustion engine and the electric motor for a particularly dynamic driving style. The total power output is equivalent to the peak output of combustion engine plus electric motor power output. For example, the Grandland X Hybrid4 with a 147kW (200hp) combustion engine and two electric motors (front/rear: 81/83kW) and a single 90kW battery has a total power output of 221kW (300hp).

INFOTAINMENT AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

The Grandland X Hybrid4 features a state-of-the-art, 8-inch infotainment system. Essential hybrid-specific information can be easily accessed via the ‘EV’ button, or via the indicator stalks for the on-board computer.

At a glance, Grandland X Hybrid4 drivers can see the current drive mode – ‘Electric’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘All-Wheel Drive’ or ‘Sport’. The ‘Powerflow’ display shows the current state of charge, energy recovery and the active power source – petrol or electric. In addition, the ‘Statistics’ screen shows the average consumption data over a select period of time using colour-coded graphics. Green indicates energy recovered by braking and partial recharging by the petrol engine, blue shows energy consumed by the vehicle battery, and orange shows fuel consumption.

On the ‘Charge’ page, the driver can check on charging progress. With ‘Immediate Charging’, the car starts charging as soon as it is docked. ‘Delayed Charging’ schedules charging to begin at a specific time of the day and removes the need to re-enter a time on a daily basis. This is particularly useful when using cheaper rates of electricity at night. In addition, drivers can also check battery level and control charging on the go via the MyVauxhall app.

Driver Assistance Systems

Numerous driver assistance systems fitted as standard ensure that the Grandland X Hybrid4 is as safe and comfortable as it is exciting to drive.

Vauxhall Connect makes journeys even more relaxing for drivers and passengers. The system includes live navigation with real-time traffic information and, in the case of heavy traffic, suggests the best alternative route while advising on consumption and mileage. For extra peace of mind, Vauxhall Connect features Emergency Call and Breakdown Call with access to Roadside Assistance.

The wider advanced driver assistance systems include:

• Forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. If the Grandland X Hybrid4 approaches a vehicle or pedestrian too quickly, the system sounds a warning chime and displays a message in the driver information centre. If a collision is imminent, the braking system is prepared and, if necessary, emergency braking is activated to avoid or reduce the effects of a potential collision.
• Driver drowsiness detection triggers an alert if vehicle behaviour suggests driver drowsiness or inattention. The system displays a message in the driver information centre and plays an acoustic signal.
• Lane keep assist warns the driver if the car leaves the lane unintentionally. The vehicle is also gently steered back into the lane. The driver will notice a slight turning movement of the steering wheel.
• Side blind zone alert helps to avoid collisions during lane-change manoeuvres when an object is detected in a blind spot. The system displays a visual alert in each exterior mirror if it detects an object that may not be visible to the driver.
• Park assist front and rear simplifies parking.
• Traffic sign recognition automatically detects speed limit signs and displays them in the driver info centre.
• Cruise control with intelligent speed limiter maintains the vehicle speed at the speed set by the driver. Together with traffic sign recognition, the system allows the vehicle speed to be adjusted quickly.

In addition to the standard equipment, a number of optional technologies help to improve the safety, comfort and convenience of the Grandland X Hybrid4:

• Adaptive cruise control maintains a certain following distance to the vehicle ahead.
• When reversing, the rear-view camera with park pilot displays the area behind the vehicle in the infotainment display, making parking easier.
• In reverse gear, the panoramic view system displays the vehicle’s surroundings as a 360-degree bird’s eye view from above the vehicle.
• Adaptive forward lighting LED headlights provide variable lighting for city-driving, country roads and motorways. Specific light functions are available for dynamic cornering, static turning and bad weather.
• High beam assist automatically switches to dipped beam for if there is traffic ahead or approaching. Headlight range control is automatic.
