GM Moves Forward: Beacon of Q1 Sales, but Tariff Dark Clouds Ahead
General Motors (GM) started 2025 on a strong note with a whopping 17% U.S. vehicle sales increase in the first quarter. The automaker’s strength came from strong pickup truck and value crossover SUV sales led by the Chevrolet Trax, which saw an incredible 57% sales increase. While GM enjoys the moment, the auto industry prepares for possible changes with President Donald Trump’s foreign car tariffs being imposed.
GM dominates Q1 2025 sales with a 17% increase, leading the industry.
Affordable SUVs like the Chevrolet Trax fuel demand, with sales up 57%.
New tariffs on imported vehicles could reshape the market in coming months.
A Strong Start for GM
During the first quarter of 2025, GM delivered 693,363 vehicles, an increase from 594,233 units for the same quarter last year. A significant chunk of this increase was due to increased consumer demand for affordable SUVs and pickup trucks, both categories in which GM is a longstanding market leader. The Chevrolet Trax, an affordable crossover that's built in South Korea, was particularly a bright spot, perhaps due to customers shopping to get ahead of impending tariff-boosted price increases.
EVs and Leadership in the Market
Though the company's more traditional lineup provided most of the lift, it also experienced a 19.2% surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales, bettering much of the rest of the industry. Vehicles such as the Cadillac Escalade IQ and Cadillac Optiq helped the company achieve the growth. Tesla, on the other hand, is expected to post weaker delivery figures in the face of fading demand and CEO Elon Musk's increasing political crises.
Industry-wide Trends: Winners and Losers
GM was not the only strong performer for an automaker during the quarter. Hyundai and Kia posted double-digit gains of 10% and 11%, respectively, and Nissan (5.7%) and Honda (5.3%) trailed behind. Toyota, the volume leader historically, could muster only a 1% gain. Stellantis also had a tough quarter with a 12% decline in sales, and Ford declined by 1.3%, partly as it was ending the Ford Edge SUV.
Automaker | Q1 2025 Sales Change |
---|---|

Hyundai | +10% |
Kia | +11% |
Nissan | +5.7% |
Honda | +5.3% |
Toyota | +1% |
Ford | -1.3% |
Stellantis | -12% |
The Tariff Effect
In spite of GM’s impressive numbers, the looming threat of Trump’s 25% tariff on imported vehicles cannot be overlooked. Automakers and analysts alike are predicting considerable price increases that could suppress demand in coming months. If consumer sentiment were to sour in the wake of rising costs, then Q2 sales could tell a different story.
For the time being, GM is clearly the industry leader, showing an ability to capitalize on the changing dynamics of the marketplace. Whether this continues to be the case in a world filled with uncertainties is yet to be seen.
