Genesis's Bold Foray into Luxury Grand Tourers
Genesis has revealed two breathtaking new concept vehicles—the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible—at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show, marking an aggressive foray into the premium two-door luxury class. Based on the flagship G90 sedan, these concepts redefine executive-class luxury with a distinct Korean interpretation of performance and style.
A Contemporary Interpretation of the Luxury Grand Tourer
Unlike many high-end brands, Genesis has yet to produce a true two-door luxury model. However, with the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible, that could soon change.
These concepts draw inspiration from past Genesis one-offs like the X Convertible and X Speedium, but their roots in the G90 sedan make them particularly intriguing—especially considering the segment’s history.
For decades, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe defined executive luxury in the grand touring segment. With its discontinuation, a void has been left in the market. The Genesis X Gran Coupe might be regarded as its spiritual successor, boasting an elegant, stretched silhouette with the brand’s hallmark Two-Line LED headlights and a commanding 3D Crest Grille.
While the S-Class Coupe had an opulent convertible counterpart, Mercedes itself left that segment behind with the discontinuation of the S-Class Cabriolet—a void Genesis may now be looking to fill.
Conceived for Distinction
The X Gran Coupe and Convertible distinguish themselves with:
-
A more raked, angular windshield
-
Lower beltline compared to the standard G90
-
Slightly enlarged fenders for an aggressive, sophisticated stance
-
Twin LED light bars at the rear for a signature look
The Gran Coupe, finished in an olive-toned color scheme, evokes Mediterranean sensibilities with olive wood trim. Meanwhile, the Convertible boasts a Cabernet Sauvignon-inspired shade of purple, reminiscent of fine wine.
Performance and Powertrain Speculations
While Genesis has not officially announced a powertrain, expectations suggest the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 from the G90, producing:
-
409 horsepower
-
405 lb-ft of torque
This setup would position the X Gran Coupe as a direct competitor to the BMW 8 Series Coupe and, had the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe continued, a legitimate rival. The aluminum-trimmed steering wheels and driver-focused cockpit suggest an emphasis on dynamic handling, proving these concepts are more than just rolling showcases.
The Future of Genesis and the Luxury Coupe Market
Genesis has a history of unveiling jaw-dropping concepts, but will the X Gran Coupe and Convertible make it to production? While there are no confirmed plans, Genesis Global Head Mike Song has stated that the next decade will focus on high-performance technology and future luxury design.
If so, these concepts could serve as a blueprint for a new generation of grand tourers, potentially reviving a segment thatMercedes-Benz has left behind.
